Our Cozy Bohemian Outdoor Happy Space

Facebooktwitterpinterestmail

All winter long my cats and I gaze out our pretty black French doors leading to our large elevated outdoor deck. The 3 doors are located in our kitchen right off our cozy dining area, where we have a big wood burning fireplace πŸ”₯ . The view from December until March is mostly icicles, snow flurries, and sometimes if we are lucky we catch the deer galloping through our yard. By March things begin to melt, and we can finally see light at the end of the brutal winter tunnel. It’s usually then, that I begin to fantasize about this years theme for our “happy place” spot on our deck. You’ll view several versions of our unique outdoor space in this post, but my favorite so far is this one, and I’m calling it “Our Cozy Bohemian Outdoor Happy Space”.

Here’s my not so fantastic view looking out those French doors I just mentioned right after the snow melted, and you can still see the ice on the water…

Our Outdoor Happy Space Before

Ugh! That poor table really has stood the test of time (we do bring the chairs in). I told my sweet husband that green cover wasn’t on tight enough for our gusty winter. He said, “I’m not going out there again, Julie.” πŸ˜† I said, “I don’t blame you, one bit!” πŸ₯Ά

After all those freezing cold days I am so excited (and a little proud too) to show you the view out those 3 French doors after I tidied up a little. Okay, let’s not beat around the Fiddle Leaf Fig, I decorated like crazy, and I hope you love it as much as we do. Welcome to “Our Cozy Bohemian Outdoor Space”…let me get the doors for you πŸ‘‡πŸ»

Our Cozy Bohemian Outdoor Space

Here we are at the best seat(s) in the house, but only for a few short summer months. This is where mostly my husband and I relax, and enjoy the natural bird sanctuary we are fortunate to live on. Our deck is elevated due to the “walkout” style of our home, and it almost feels like we are nestled into our own little bird house up here. From 2 swans and their baby cygnets, to the friendly crane family, ducks, eagles, cardinals, and blue jay’s galore, it’s like entering an aviary at the zoo. Sitting here is pure heaven on Earth, especially with the love of my life ❀️

Waterproof Outdoor Linen Curtains

My goal this year was to combine beautiful vibrant colors up against a very green botanical/neutral backdrop (did you happen to see our Modern Botanical Bathroom Makeover yet?). I began with searching for affordable water-proof sheer linen curtains and I found some with detachable velcro tabs at the top to hang easily from our canopy. Speaking of which, the canopy is honestly one of the best investments we ever made 3 years ago for our daughters graduation party. Hanging curtains out here is a game changer as far as ambiance.

I used 4 curtain panels total to get this look (2 on each side gathered together in the middle with suede leather twine), and I love how it gives the space a closed in protected feel from the elements. I can also untie my little handmade ties so the curtains fall freely if it gets chilly, or if I just feel like it 😊. I didn’t put curtains on the entrance sides because it would be too fussy.

Vibrant Bohemian Pillows

After I had my curtains picked out, and tested them, I went on the search for colorful pillows (one of my most favorite side jobs πŸ˜†). I quickly came across these stunning Bohemian blue, purple & pink pillows and I fell in love. These are extremely high quality pillows for the very low price. They come in a set of 4 as “pillow covers” and then you buy the insert separate if you don’t have an old pillow to use. I just can’t say enough about how beautiful they are. They are my babies now 😊

Faux or real fern photoed?

Real & Fake Boston Ferns & Fiddle Leaf Fig Plants

Just in case you haven’t noticed something different about my plants πŸ€”, I wanted to give you a few tips on Boston Ferns and my Fiddle Leaf Fig plants out here. I did about 50% fake, and 50% real. YEP. I am a sneaky Julie. Actually, no I’m not. I’m a smart Julie. Having fake and faux together has literally changed my life. Just think, 1/2 the watering, 1/2 the worrying, and half of them last FOREVER. Can you tell which ones are fake? HINT: I did 1 fake fern, and 1 real fern.

I found the Boston Fern wood planters on Facebook Marketplace from a local dealer (I think it’s so wonderful to shop local when you can to help your community). She gave me a great price, and I ended up putting one of the real ferns she had in the planters on our front porch because it was so gorgeous. When I added my fake Boston Ferns to the empty planter I couldn’t get over how well it all blended in.

Real fern on right.

Before I move on, I need to tell you about the beautiful Fiddle Leaf Fig plants! If you look closely, you’ll see a tall Fiddle Leaf Fig, and a short. I’ve had the tall one for a few years now and it is fake. The short one is from Home Depot recently and I only paid $16 for it. I’ve heard great things about these easy-care fast-growing big leaf plants, but beware they are toxic to pets. Here’s a close-up:

Bohemian Solar Powered Hanging Outdoor Light Fixture

What brings it all together for me, is that Boho wicker looking light fixture hanging over the table. I couldn’t resist this unique, yet subtly soothing accent to Our Cozy Bohemian Outdoor Happy Space. It actually looks like it was made by a homemade crafter, but it really is just from Target πŸ˜†. Real wicker reminds me of my mom who is 87 on this Sunday 😊. She had wicker accents all over our house growing up and it’s all back in style now (you knew it Mom!).

I really love that the hanging light is solar powered (hung with just a hook), and we draped the cord over to the corner of the canopy so it can catch some rays and recharge. If interested, I hope you can find them still at Target, but if not, I found these outdoor solar lanterns I think you might like.

Here’s everything at dusk when the light is on, and it is really romantic, don’t you think?

I told my husband that this is better than any restaurant, we just need food 😊

Julie I love it! Especially the pillow covers! Our daughter and grandson are coming for 2 weeks. We have an entire (without kitchen) area in our lower level. We recently purchased set of twin beds. I did not want to spend a lot of money for bedding as they are here about 6 weeks total during the year. I found white sets at a whopping $42/ea comforter, sheets sham cases etc…but they are β€œblah” white. Just saw these pillows and β€œYAY” instant colour for reasonable $$$. And they will will go on my deck chairs as well! This boho look is totally not my normal style…however, these 2 are from California so they are perfect. And they will make my plain black deck chairs pop too. There is a lot of conversation here just to say WOW and thanks for the tips! Looks great

    • Julie says:

Yeay! So happy you found the perfect pillows for your white comforters. They will totally pop on white! They are really nicely made, too!

Julie, you knocked it out of the park with this one! Being a transplanted easterner to the midwest i also understand how important it is for us to enjoy every summer evening outside that we can. This cozy Bohemian deck will provide a summer of wonderful evenings that can stretch into late September if we are lucky. Simply perfect…now order carry out and enjoy!

    • Julie says:

Yhas we are definitely going to order in and enjoy this nook. I’m actually sitting here right now πŸ˜‚. Thank you, as always Nancy!!

I love the whole look! At least you didn’t go over the top with the Bohemian. I love the bohemian look too but some are just too much of it. You did the perfect amount and the colors are very soothing! I can’t wait to get my deck built. It was suppose to be last year but Covid happened and we couldn’t get the wood, then it was sky high in price, so now we’re waiting for pricing to go down. It will probably be next year but I’m not sure I can wait that much longer..lol! Anyway…it is just lovely! Did you say your home is an air bnb rental? LOL

  14. […] We actually enjoy eating at our coffee tables, and we also have the option of eating at the dining area on our deck, and in the family […]

  15. […] I couldn’t get over how pretty this inexpensive “Mother’s Day Table” turned out. I want you to know that I did not purchase anything for this table. Everything you see in the photos was found in our basement, or in plain sight. I shopped our home, so I’m going to give you a few snazzy tricks I use. For example…take a look at the gorgeous soft velvety tablecloth. Can you believe that it’s a mint colored blanket? You’ll also see it used here as blanket on our “Summer Deck“. […]
