Dollar Store Iridescent Tablescape

Darnit!  The only thing I forgot were the bubbles. You can’t have a “Dollar Store Iridescent Tablescape” without bubbles, now can you?  Well, I guess you can, but they sure would have been a cute addition since bubbles are “iridescent”, and I know the dollar store carries the cute little bottles.  Well, at least you know that you can add them in if you decide to try this fun idea using mostly dollar store (specifically “Dollar Tree”) items to create one of the prettiest tablescapes I’ve ever created.  The table isn’t “trendy”, and it’s totally COOL, especially if you include those bubbles for folks to play with.  Did I mention, cheap?  Oh yah.  It’s definitely affordable.  Let’s take the “Dollar Store Iridescent Tablescape” tour…

First, let me explain how this all got started.  I mean, an IRIDESCENT table, Julie?  What is up with that?  Well, you know I try to be different and think outside the box, right?  While I was at the dollar store looking for cute plates for our new patio table set (see our new table below), I actually picked out some colorful white paper plates with blue flowers all over them.  Totally boring.  I carried them around the store, but continued to shop for something better.  That’s when I came across the clear square vinyl sink protectors that reminded me of a placemat  😯 .  Boom, the clear iridescent theme flourished from there.  I put down the boring paper plates and continued on my “clear” mission.

Have you noticed the dollar store’s all seem to have a ton of clear plastic table setting supplies now a days?  I’m not sure if that’s a good thing, but if you’re planning an outdoor get together with simple food that isn’t hot, this would work.  Now, I wouldn’t go putting hot bubbly lasagna on these plates, but a hotdog, and a salad, sure thing.  Before I get the plastic police after me, let me just say that I do not recommend eating on plastic every day.  I’m not sure about you, but my hotdog would probably sit on this plate for about 3.2 minutes before I gobbled it down.  So, no worries.

After I got home, I began to assemble the “clear” tablescape and realized that the clear vinyl placemats glowed on the table 😯 .  What the what!?  They actually looked bright blue!  The photo below shows how the outdoors really lit them up and gave them an iridescent glow.  I had no idea they would do that.  So, of course that got me all excited and I knew I could really make the table even prettier than I imagined.

After everything was on the table I knew I had to find some flowers somewhere, so I asked my oldest to drive the get-a-way car while I stole searched for pretty flowers on the roadside.  My youngest came along for the ride, and even brought our cat with him.  Unfortunately, I didn’t find a ton of pretty weeds on the side of the road, but mixing what I did find (the pinkish ones) with some of the flowers/plants in my own yard really seemed to do the trick.  I ended up using the pinkish purple weeds, a purple petunia, some purple little flowers from my yard, and a fern leaf in each shot glass.  They looked so pretty in the clear dollar store plastic shot glasses that I had left over from my daughter’s graduation favors.

Oh geeze, I better tell you about this gorgeous brown wicker table set I ordered on-line, before I get too carried away with the glowing decor.  We recently moved our huge teak wood table, and umbrella down to the lower brick patio because we very rarely used it, and I found the top of it to be so rough on my fair arms.  It was also so big, and I really desired a small glass table with comfortable wicker chairs.  I scored this one for a great price, and I completely recommend it to you.  The chairs are very comfortable and the entire set is very high quality.  I absolutely love it.

Everything really tied in nicely with the canopy, white curtains, and our remaining outdoor furniture.  I can’t wait to have a romantic dinner out here with my husband.  We were going to have one the night after I created this table, but it rained.  We were actually so happy we finally got rain that we didn’t even care.

One of my favorite touches on the “Dollar Store Iridescent Tablescape” is the dollar store candle. All you need is a clear glass vase, a bag of iridescent clear beads, and a candle.  Heck, you can even get the lighter at the dollar store.

To top everything off, I tucked dollar store white fancy napkins/clear flatware into my own iridescent glass wine glasses (source below).

Now, all I need are 3 guests, some hotdogs, and maybe you can bring the potato salad & bubbles 😆 ?

Even tho it’s “just” $tree plastic it still looks quite inspired and very pretty Using the sink protectors for place mats is so clever and worked perfectly with your iridescent theme. Goes to show how presentation over shadows idea of fancy. Your wonderful table set is pretty doggoned snazzy also. Your patio is coming together so beautifully.

    Hi Julie:
Was wondering if the placemats looked iridescent because of the glass table top? So pretty.
What a smart and creative lady you are. Thanks for the great ideas.

    Cheers, Bette

Hi Bette! I think that certainly helped flow light through the vinyl, but on our wood table in the before shot they still look kind of glow-ish to me.

WOW! What a Gorgeous table setting and your ‘little’ details make the whole thing come together with just a bit of added color but yet it’s not overpowering with color. Your patio furniture sitting right by your window box; nice touch. Really brings everything together.
I have been picking up a few things here and there at Dollar Tree for our 50th anniversary come next June so you have really given me some great ideas along with your inspiration. You totally rock.:} Thank You.
Love your wicker patio set. Goes well with your porch railing
