My sweet friend, and colleague, Paula, from Sweet Pea brought 16 of us DIY home decorating bloggers together, so we can celebrate spring in style. I have to admit, if it wasn’t for these lovely ladies (see remaining 15 blogs below), I don’t think I would have had the energy to focus on my porch π. All of our lives have literally been turned upside down (we are on day 17 quarantine) by this scary global virus, but it’s desperate times like these that you just have to go on, be strong, and do the things you do best. For me, cooking for my family and decorating are at the top of that list, so here I am πͺπ». I hope you enjoy my new “Porch Planters with Faux Ferns”…the decorated porch and planters really cheered me up.

Before I share the changes, I wanted to show you a BEFORE photo even though this was taken a few summers ago when we put wood steps over our beat up brick steps. This photo really shows how boring our porch can be. Geeze…hand me a pillow so I can take a nap.

Now look at our porch and tell me what stands out the most…or maybe nothing stands out π? Can you find the bunny’s tail?

It’s so hard for me to pinpoint (after obsessing over it π) what stands out as the biggest change, but I will tell you my favorite by far is the rainbow mat. It’s just so cheerful and fun π . In addition the rainbow mat was a fantastic price.
Next…the white planters.

You know me…I am honest Abe. The planters were not cheap π, but I know they are a fantastic investment especially since they can stay out there year round. I can’t wait to put little Christmas trees, or even big pumpkins in them. Did I mention they are basically self watering, too.
Speaking of watering, I bet you’re wondering how my ferns are looking so healthy so early in the season- especially considering it gets into the 30’s at night here still. Well, I will tell you how…

My ferns are FAKE! Yep! Whatever way you want to say it, faux ferns, imitation ferns, artificial ferns, silk ferns, either way they are still FAKE! I am in shock at how real these fake ferns look. Just take a look at the difference between these faux ferns and the real deal pictured below.

Here’s the fake again…

What I really like about the fake ferns is that they don’t shed ππ» , don’t need watering, and they can handle extreme temperatures if they have to. I mean, I don’t plan on keeping them out all winter, but when the temps drop, I don’t have to do a thing to these fronds-y friends. By the way, we filled each planter with soil, so when I want to plant seasonal flowers in here I can easily.

Between the ferns and the planters, and even the little rainbow mat, it really seems to “ground” the porch and add a modern dimension that was missing before. Oh, dear…let’s not forget the modern address numbers. Did you notice them yet? To be totally transparent, they took me a while to find. Then when I did finally find the size I wanted (4 inch), they only came in black, so I ended up spray painting these white so they would pop.
Hey, that reminds me. I still haven’t revealed our fabulous new house paint color. That is coming up soon. This bold dark color makes such a huge difference in the look of our home. Quite shocking to be honest because the white trim really pops now, and shows the true architectural charm.
Here’s a few more ideas for the door such as a simple canvas, or traditional wreath…

While I was busy working, these 2 rascals showed up to play with my thrift store bunny. Even though Spooky (the black cat) looks a little intoxicated, I assure you she was sober π.

Julie, your porch looks great. Though I love the real thing some of the artificial plants are so beautiful and can give you a great look without the worry of watering, sunlight etc.. The white planters with faux ferns is a classic look and the pop of color from your rainbow welcome mat is sure to put a smile on everyone’s face. Stay well.
Thank you, Patti!
Your porch looks so welcoming, Julie! The planter style is one that I’ve wanted for a long time and the fact that it is self watering makes it even better. I had no idea that your ferns are faux, they look like the real deal! My favorite part of your porch decor is your rainbow mat. Right now we all need rainbows in our lives with the promise of better days that hopefully will be very soon on our way. Take care in this very scary time that we are experiencing.
Thanks again, Paula!
What a pretty porch! So springy and so inspiring that you used fake ferns. I am a disaster with ferns. They literally start dying the second I display them. I am definitely trying your way next time. So nice to tour with you – happy spring!
Shelley
Thank you, Shelley!
Those planters on your porch are lovely, and so versatile, Julie. Wishing I had enough room to add one or two to my little landing, but still thankful for what I have! Pinned, and love touring with you!
Thank you, Julie!
Looking at all your faux plants and creative door mat gives me so many ideas!
Thank you for showing your lovely Spring porch, Julie.
Hey Meegan! Thank you!

The rainbow mat is darling and a fun addition Julie. So are the handsome new planters. It all works so well together with great curb appeal!

Totally agree, Charlotte!
I like the pink//red rose bud wreath, however i think the ferns look very fake, very fake.
So double fake? Not just fake? Lol. I absolutely love them! Especially since itβs getting down to 33 this week.

Great fresh update, indeed! There is a certain time of year when fake plants outside really do make sense and help you get a jump on the season. It all looks great!
Thank you, Lora! My neighbors are probably wondering how my ferns are surviving this cold! Ha ha
Hey Julie:
I love the planters and ferns, but the first thing I noticed was the house numbers, so plain but elegant. As another guest said,:We need fun and colour in our lives right now and your mat really says it all. Might try the ferns, as like you, Canada stays pretty cool at night.
Stay well.
Cheers, Bette
I agree, Bette! The numbers pop! My husband didnβt like them at first, but I do!!
You are making me crave the summer even more, especially after viewing your fab front porch. Niceeeee! I love your planters, and the fern makes them pop!!! I also love your rainbow rug. Right away I noticed your numbers, because I purchased some earlier this year.
Stay say and healthy
Stay safe, Ivory!! Thank so much for your sweet words!
What a fun porch, Julie! That rainbow mat just hints at the fun inside. You have such a great sense of humor. It was fun to read your post! Can’t believe those are fake ferns!
Thank you, Crissy! I have felt like my sense of humor has faded, but now I feel good knowing itβs still showing up!! Thanks for stopping over!
It looks awesome! The planters make the door more of a focal point. The mat brings a nice pop of color.
Thank you, Karen! XO
