Silver & Gold Christmas Holiday Housewalk 2020

Facebooktwitterpinterestmail

Shake off those snow boots, and come on in! Welcome to the 2020 Holiday Housewalk hosted by Jennifer Rizzo Design Company. This year we are celebrating the 10 year anniversary for this amazing virtual housewalk, and I am honored to be a 2 year old. Yep, I’m in the terrible 2’s πŸ˜†! Our “Silver & Gold Christmas Holiday Housewalk 2020” is house #19 in the line up of 29, and I think you might get a kick out of how I ventured outside the gift bag this year.

~Before I get the sleigh warmed up, here’s a special message to all the decorators out there who put so much time, energy, and love into your home for the holidays. What makes your decorating beautiful is not the price tag on the trendy tree you purchased, how you hung your garland ever so perfectly like they do in magazines, or even if you scored the coolest vintage ornament on the planet. What makes your decorating beautiful is that you did it out of love for your family. Never compare your decorating style to others, instead marvel in your own.~

If you happen to be visiting from the home before mine “Number Fifty-Three“, hello and welcome to our cozy nest here in snowy Michigan. Angela, from Number Fifty-Three has a lovely home, and I am looking forward to visiting her Christmas tour today on my break with a big cup of tea.

Okay, so this is where I tell you a little secret for this year’s Christmas tour. I decided to spread my decorating wings a little more this time and repurpose items that you may, or may not have thought to use in your holiday decorating. In addition, I also tried to incorporate a rustic, nostalgic, glam factor. So, grab those mittens, and hold on tight to your sleigh. It’s time to get innovative and use what we have.

The Glamorous Snowy Foyer

While dreaming of a faux snowy staircase for my glamorous snowy foyer, I actually envisioned tons of fairy lights, snow flakes, and icicles dripping from the railings. What I ended up with instead, was something outrageously beautiful (and no lights required).

White feathered boas are one of the easiest decorating repurpose tricks I’ve seen in blog land for fake snow. I can’t take full credit for being the first to use white feathered boas for snow, but I don’t think I’ve seen them on a traditional staircase such as our’s. It just looks so pretty, especially when the afternoon sun hits it.

I was instantly in love with the ease of wiring these 6 ft. long white feathered boas to the railing, the only issue was my cat, “Manboy”. He thought the feathers were birds, so my advice is if you have a cat/dog, you may want to try something else such as a white scarf, or white tulle. I ended up taking the boas down shortly after the photos, and using them in places he wasn’t interested in.

The furry white boas sure did add that glam factor, so I had to tone “Marilyn” down a little with some chunky real logs to match the DIY Sidelight Shutters, and then soften the blow with my family in several silver frames “sledding down” the stairs. The icing on the cake, were the black and white ice skates.

The Golden Living Room

Here we go guys, now we are going to have some authentic repurposing fun, and to be honest it’s recycling, too. You see, our living room is connected to the foyer, so I decided they should be similarly dramatic.

“The Golden Living Room” I thought how easy…I already have the gold thrift store mirror hanging over the mantel, and the gold fireplace screen as it’s partner. All I needed was garland and a gold tree. Did I just say gold tree?

The champagne gold Christmas tree came first as a little “Julie gift” to myself 🀭 months ago when it was on sale. For the gold garland I remembered I had an old, faded, dusty Capiz shell wind chime that I had hanging in the basement waiting for a makeover that might work if I spray painted it gold. Holy golden nuggets, it totally worked.

You may notice that I scattered the gold Capiz shell strands anywhere I could find. In fact, you’ll find them hiding out not only in our Christmas trees, but in almost every photo in my tour kind of like hidden Easter eggs 😳.

I just couldn’t get over how gorgeous the shells looked shimmering gold tones, and then when I saw them with the white feathers that looked just like snow, I knew I had struck feathers, I mean gold.

Once again, I was sure to add a nostalgic vibe with my gold framed young beautiful grandmother, and my gorgeous loving mother- in- law as a little girl holding her cat.

The glam factor made an appearance once again with the pretty white feather boas, gold geometric star tree topper, and gold shimmering lights off of the Capiz shells, and champagne colored tree. Yee-ha!

Lastly, more wood logs help ground all the fluff, and accompany the stained wood on the wall like a best friend forever would accompany you through life.

Before I get any more poetic πŸ˜†, I think we better eat. Are you hungry? I hope so because we have a special Christmas menu for you. Let’s go to the other side of this fireplace…

The Rustic Cozy Kitchen & Heart of the Home

There he is, the white feather boa lover. Look at him looking all innocent. This is the guy who bites my toes at 5am, too. If he could, he would steal this show. Well, maybe he already did, but I will keep going anyway…

I hope you’re hungry because not only do we have a gorgeous tablescape for you, we also have a real live menu (see full Christmas Menu at the end).

Wouldn’t it be cozy to cover up while you eat?

Our dining table is nestled in between our second fireplace (this one is wood burning) and our kitchen island. My goal with this silver & gold table was to help my guests feel as though they were sitting at an elegant setting topped with fluffy snow, drinking sparkling wine/water next to a warm crackling fire without the stress of being formal (maybe next year for the guests?).

Oh, I know this scenario is a little far fetched, but it sounds fun doesn’t it? Especially while reminiscing about the vintage black and white photos placed in each Mini-Tree Stump Place Card Holders.

BTW, the gold chargers and the white plates are from the dollar store. Once again, all the boxes are checked off here. Repurposed βœ… Rustic βœ… Nostalgic βœ… Glam βœ…

Here’s the view from different angles, although I missed the built-in white white hutch this year.

This is where I usually sit when I write/edit, and behind that island is where I cook up a storm. If you’re interested in more information on how we transformed this kitchen ourselves over the last 11 years, just click here: DIY Kitchen Makeovers.

After dinner of course there’s always the dreaded dishes. Hey, what do you know-here’s my mom back in the 50’s doing dishes! Her name is Joanne, and she is 86 now. I love her & my dad dearly.

Here’s the sink where Joanne’s last born does her dishes 50 years later. Isn’t that interesting to think about? Time flies.

I carried the gold through by wrapping $5 gold garland around a rusty old whiskey barrel hoop and added fairy lights. Low and behold, there’s more Capiz shell garland, too.

Wait, don’t go yet. There’s still time for coffee…

The Silver Zen Lounge

Well, hello snazzy wood slider door to the Silver Zen Lounge! I actually just posted our “Zen Lounge Makeover“, but it wasn’t quite ready for Christmas until now. This is where most of the silver comes into play, and I think you can see how beautifully the two metals mix on the silver tree. This is also where our family likes to play.

First, you may be wondering what the heck is a zen lounge? Well, there’s a back story to ours, but basically what it comes down to is that it’s a family room that is very “zen”, and very cool/calm. A place the older kids (ours are 18 & 21) hang out comfortably without being harassed by nagging parents πŸ˜†. Also, a place where everything is just A O K, which is very much needed these days.

I really wish you could hear the soothing jazz our daughter plays for us every night in here. We recently found a holiday jazz station, too.

Our new dark walls really made it easy to carry the before mentioned elements through. The silver tree is decorated lightly with silver and gold, and of course the repurposed gold Capiz shells found their home there, too.

I didn’t add any white feather boas in this room because I felt the glam factor shined through enough just through the intense color scheme and silver stars/snowflakes.

Our favorite coffee table and homemade stump end table from our yard add that rustic element, and there’s my husband’s sweet grandma, Millie watching over us all.

Let’s head back towards the kitchen, and I’ll show you that “Christmas Menu”…I’m hungry from all this babbling.

Julie, Just finished your Christmas house-tour and I feel as though I’ve been there – needless to say it is gorgeous and makes me feel like Christmas is here, right here in Amherst. All the touches of glamour of gold and silver. The touches of white and the gold ornaments are most beautiful. And of course the kitties, Spooky, Sylvia, and not to forget the Forest are such a lovable touch of being home. You did a fantastic job and I’m very proud of you and Richard, Daphne and Louie and there were times during the tour made me tear up. I miss you all and wish for the Fiato family the Merriest Christmas, filled with my love and may God bless you all. Your Mom & Gramma

And we also put small photos of those we have lost on the tree. I must admit everyone loves the tree. I also make same appetizer tree but must larger & just a little different. My Mom started making them at least 40 yrs go. Love your site.
