Beautiful Vintage Family Room Reveal

I will never forget the moment I walked through the front door of our new home before we knew it was “the one”. The two story wall of windows that greeted me as I walked through to the family room captivated me instantly as I tore off my boots in anticipation to see the glorious room I was hoping for. I was not disappointed as I stepped in further under the open staircase and saw what would become my new blank canvas. I hope you enjoy our “Beautiful Vintage Family Room Reveal” which is loaded with many new and old vintage finds from the thrift store which have helped bring my vision to fruition.

The Family Room Before

It only took me a glance to realize that I loved the open concept of the home and got out my phone to snap as many photos as possible so I could examine them further after the showing was over. I feel it’s not only exciting for you to see the before photos, but it’s also necessary so you can determine what style suits you. Everyone has different style, taste, and knowledge when it comes to decorating and by no means do I think my way is the only way. It’s up to you to figure out your way after you see all the ideas 😊. With that being said, here’s a few before photos to show you what it looked like before we actually moved in…

The above photo is right after we got in and then the below photo is after it was painted. You may have noticed that I decided I didn’t want “pretend” curtains framing the large windows. We actually asked our painter to remove them and it made it easier to paint. I ended up selling the drapes on Facebook Marketplace and they went fast, yippee! Time to Decorate the Family Room!

Before we moved we had so many different ideas on what we were going to do with the fireplace wall which we wanted as the focal point. We even thought we might remove the gas unit and replace it with a wood burning stove with a big pipe going up to the ceiling 😲. We can dream! After we realized how expensive it was to replace the carpet, and also to paint…we decide to work with what we have and it turned out way better than expected. First up, the fireplace looked so much better white up against the charcoal. It really shined, and crowning it with my thrift store mirror I painted gold many years ago was so satisfying.

Giving the mirror I painted many moons ago a modern touch was so easy with the rechargeable sconces on each side, and you’ll notice I have more of those rechargeable battery operated lights scattered around the house…

What to Do with Two Awkward Nooks in the Family Room

So, now that I knew the gold mirror looked spectacular on the mantel, I had to figure out what to do with two awkward nooks that surround the fireplace. I decided to step outside the nook and really think about what we were going to need these spaces for. I mentioned in last month’s post that I am not a fan of putting the television over the fireplace. So, instead, I put it over a thrifted dresser we had that I re-painted. My husband attached the TV to the wall above, and we went high and I did that for a reason. You can read all about it here: BUILT IN TV STAND THE EASY WAY.

Moving on to the left side now, I used one of the ladder shelves we had from the apartment. This shelf is so easy to install, or move around, and I am in love with how I can switch out the decor according to the seasons. Maybe I will load it up with several pumpkins this year? By the way…you can find the shelf here if you are interested 🎃.

The Full Family Room Reveal

Beautiful Vintage Family Room Reveal

Well…there she is! Our new family room that can seat more folks than I have 😆. All joking aside….I absolutely love the vibe we have created here. Every night my husband and I take a quick nap on the sofa, and then share our meal together while watching our favorite show. I find it to be very cozy, relaxing, and even a hint of romantic. We had no idea how much we were going to enjoy the gas fireplace, because we have come across some that aren’t the best. This one feels real, and it is also cheaper than buying wood.

Before I move on to those gorgeous vintage green chairs I scored, did you happen to notice the new high traffic rug I found? It really brings a modern flare to the room, and helps show off the hard wood floors much better than my white one did. The rug comes in many, colors, sizes, and is on sale.

Vintage Finds for the Family Room

Next up…and no doubt the “stars” of the show…these vintage wood green velvet chairs I scored at the thrift store for $29 each. I was absolutely shocked when I was out with my daughter thrifting. All I had to do to restore them was clean with disinfectant (spray & wipe), vacuum, polish with THIS BEESWAX, sew on buttons (there were a few in back of the chair I removed to the front), and touch up scratches with THESE FURNITURE MARKERS. Luckily our new kitty doesn’t pay any attention to them. Meet “Rosie” at the end of this post.

What do you think of the three panel divider that I placed behind the sofa in front of the window? I found that at a thrift store and did not do a thing to it. I was thinking it would add character to a very large windowed area. I planned on hanging little plants on it, but now after these photos I have decided to let that idea go to the wayside because it is gorgeous as is.

Here’s another peak of the sister chairs and the next vintage addition to our family room is sitting behind them…

I’ve always desired a dark china cabinet that would show off my mom’s precious milk glass collection, especially that gorgeous cake plate. Bingo! I found this one on Facebook Marketplace for $100 and it was a mess 😆. We had to order new glass on line that we installed ourselves with just a little bit of strong glue. I restored the rest of the cabinet similar to the technique I used for the chairs. First, I cleaned it with this soap. Then I polished it with the beeswax mentioned above. Lastly, I used stain markers to cover up any scratches. What a beauty!

A PEEK UPSTAIRS ABOVE OUR FAMILY ROOM

Before you meet our new family member…I thought I would give you a peek upstairs. We just finished our guest room, and our room, and the gym is done, too! So much more to share with you I hope you stick with me. Our bedroom is completely different from before, and the gym is right next door to it. I also have our bathroom coming up that has a botanical feel. Anyway…here’s the open hall looking over the foyer/family room. We replaced that hanging light fixture with a smaller, more appropriately sized one (the before is below with me holding it to show you how big it was). I also decided to showcase the wedding gown art with more of the sconces I used down stairs. This is actually where our new family member likes to sprint 😆…

Meet Rosie Our New Rescue Kitty

Rosie was in the shelter for over 90 days and I just couldn’t take it anymore. I didn’t really plan on having another cat (the kids took our 3 previous cats with them), but she was going to be put down if I didn’t take her-for real 😖. Let me tell you, she is the sweetest cat ever. I think I needed her, too! ♥️ She watches me cook, takes naps with us, and follows me everywhere. Rick has fallen for her too 😉. What a true blessing~
