I have a thing for Rick, I mean thrift store colored glass 😆 and my pretty collection has grown over the years. When my husband and I moved into an apartment for a couple years to watch the market, I packed it up and put it in our storage garage until we found our next home. Well…here we our in our new home a couple months now, and I found the perfect sunny spot to display almost every piece of colored glass I own. I now display it next to our kitchen in our little casual dining area that leads to my office, and our sunny patio. I hope you are inspired to learn “How to Create a Thrift Store Colored Glass Wall” out of things most folks don’t pay any attention to.
Dining Area Before We Moved In
The photo above was taken during the tour we took before we bought the house. I wanted to show you the open window wall that leads from a small dining area into a built-in office or command station (if you want to call it that). I don’t have little kiddos anymore, so I am calling it an office for redheadcandecorate.com and using it for my craft storage, personal bills, and you know all the things we all have to keep organized when we own a home. I thought it was a unique space just off the kitchen (pantry is to the left, too). Somehow, the opening in the wall seemed more like a place people would line up and give me their credit card to pay for their colonoscopy 😆. It took me a few weeks to decide to ask Rick if he knew how to cover that big daddy up. He did.

Closing Up the Wall with Drywall for the Thrift Store Colored Glass Wall
I’m not going to get into a tutorial on drywall because there are many out there, but I will tell you it is harder than I thought it would be. Rick did such a wonderful job teaching me, and helping me create this Thrift Store Colored Glass Wall. He is almost finished with the other side, so I can hang something pretty above my built-in counter desk. By the way, Rick also has an office, and a bathroom in his own hallway 🤭. Much deserved for my hardworking guy. Okay…back to the colored glass shelf-let’s get this thing up!
How to Create a Thrift Store Colored Glass Wall in Dining Area
Ta-dah! There she is…the new and improved “Thrift Store Colored Glass Wall” or shelf if you think that is a better name for it 🌈 . Either way, I am so in love with this improved open edition next to our new dining nook, even more than the first “Rainbow Ombre Shelf” I did a few years back.
The best advice I can give for creating something like this for your own home, is to find a spot for it even if it is a small area like a window sill to set one row of colored glass. Find that spot big or small! Next…visit your cabinets first, then local thrift stores searching for your favorite colored glass in vases, bottles, bowls, and even old vintage ashtrays. If you look closely I even used a green beer bottle, and old AVON salt & pepper shakers.
This shelf is so easy to install because it screws in just at the top. You can screw it into studs, or use WALL ANCHORS like we used.

I think this is one of my favorite projects you’ve ever done! It gives off the perfect rainbow 🌈 vibe!! I can’t wait to see it in person! Great teamwork. xoxo
Hi Julie, everything is looking really pretty in your new home. Was wondering how long it took you to collect the colored glassware???
Great question! I started off w a few green pieces and them one day at the thrift store I saw tons of the different colored glass. I bet you could do it in 1 day! I have slowly added more, but I think I am at my limit ha ha. So to answer your question it’s been in the making my entire life because some pieces are from my childhood, but the majority are from the thrift store that one day a couple years ago.
