I invite you to stop over the second Wednesday of every month, to enjoy what us thrifty gals are up to. You can see this month’s thrift store makeovers at the end of this post, but first I will show you mine 😃. This round I am focused on “Free Home Decorating Ideas Using Colored Glass Vases” that you can find at the…you guessed it, the THRIFT STORE (or maybe your cabinet?)!

Free Home Decorating Ideas Using Colored Glass Vases

A few years ago I was in my favorite local thrift store and I was in the “glass vase isle”. Have you ever noticed it? I call it that because there seems to be a section dedicated to glass vases in every thrift store I go to. I think it’s so common because giving flowers is still a thing (thank goodness) and all those glass vases have to go somewhere, right? Folks don’t like to throw away a vase that came from someone they love, so it gets put in a cabinet and forgotten about for years until it finally ends up at the thrift store. Well, I am here to tell you that these pretty (and sometimes colorful) babies can add serious depth to your home without spending a lot, and the bonus is you are recycling. Here’s how it all started…

The Thrift Store Colored Glass Rainbow Shelf

When I was in the thrift store a few years ago something clicked 🌈 . I began to recognize all the beautiful colors of glass that was actually scattered on the shelves. The more I organized in my shopping cart by hue, the more I thought I was on to something. I’ve always loved rainbows, so I slowly developed a collection of colored glass vases that could light up any room! I originally created the Rainbow Shelf at our old house, but I loved it so much that I recreated it at our new place in the dining nook in our kitchen. Can you spot the cool purple rectangular vase in the photo below? That’s what inspired me this month…

How to Utilize Colored Glass Vases Throughout Your Home Effortlessly

So, I recently started to spread out my colored glass vase collection throughout the house. In doing so, I came up with a few affordable ideas actually “utilizing” the vases instead of just displaying their beautiful shape/color. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love just displaying colored glass especially where the light hits it like on on a window sill, but now I am spreading the love throughout our home. It’s like it all makes sense now-it’s all coming together. So, let’s see where that purple vase ended up…

Isn’t that thrift store purple vase pretty all lit up 🔥? Thrift store colored glass vases are absolutely ideal for candle holders, or hurricanes (kitty protectors, too)). We recently bought a new sofa (reveal is next) and I needed to choose an accent color in our family room to go with greys and greens. I chose cool pinks and purples. Just look how pretty this old vase looks now! I found the scentless non-drip pillar candle at HomeGoods in clearance and the large green glass vase to the right is actually from Kohl’s cash I had (yippee).

Notice I took the green glass a different route…I added a real plant clipping from my huge Pathos plant. I have literally done this trick all over the house and here’s proof with a little “Pathos parade” using just clippings off the plant, water, and of course the thrift store vase…

Our son found this beautiful green glass vase at the thrift store and gifted it to me for Christmas ❤️. Isn’t it gorgeous? It’s perfect for adding houseplant clippings to propagate or keep as is. This acrylic shelf is from our kitchen makeover. Click here to view
Here’s another thrift store vase I have with my Pathos clippings and this one is going strong now for 2 years. I don’t have to do a thing to it, just add water every month. Bonus…it does well in low light or high light, just no direct sun. It just feeds off itself and keeps getting bigger and bigger with no care whatsoever.
Here’s another thrift store vase full of a Pathos in our laundry room. She is so happy I enjoy checking on her growth every day as I do the laundry. I guess she is my laundry buddy. I asked her to fold, but she declined 😆
Here’s one more using a plant that only requires water….I found the plant at Home Depot, but I do not have the name of it. It doesn’t need anything for months at a time and it is just sitting in water in the thrift store vase. You can see the roots through the glass…

Going Back to a Basics and Using the Thrift Store Glass Vase for a Vase

So, now we know how to utilize the thrift store vases for candles or plants, how about just going back to basics and using it for what it was intended for…a vase. Below you’ll see how I found faux purple Tulips that look so real for a large vase I scored a few years back at a thrift store…

Here’s a photo of the vase without the Tulips and in our “in between houses” apartment a couple years ago. Ironically enough, while writing this post I realized that the color scheme with the purple and grey sofa is actually what I went with for our new sofa. I can’t wait to show you the big fluffy grey sectional using these colors…

You have quite a collection, Julie! Each piece is more lovely than the next. I have mostly red glass pieces…go figure! You’ve inspired me to break out of my color rut and look for other colored glass next time I go thrifting. Thanks!

    Julie,

I love your collection of thrift store vases! All of the colors make me smile. I haven’t had a pothos plant in 40 years! I think I’ll have to grab one this year. All of your ideas are so fun, and I bet a lot of people will wish they hadn’t donated their vases once they see this article!
