Here’s a super fun & quick post I didn’t plan to write so soon! You see, folks are asking for the information on the gorgeous black paint color we used on our garage (and our front door), so here I am on a Friday night with the deets. You guys are not going to believe the difference black paint can make on the exterior of your home in this latest post, “How to paint your garage door black”.

The Story Behind the Black Painted Garage
To my surprise, my husband decided to paint the garage door after work today after he was finishing the last touch-ups on the front door he started earlier in the week. This handsome guy is a painting machine, and I he knows what he is doing because he had his own painting company back in the day that put him through law school. He would paint all day, then go to school at night 😵💫, and I waited for him with a big smile when he got home. Well, here we are almost 30 years later doing the opposite. Lawyer by day…painter by night and I am still here smiling 🤩.
You can see below how 2 coats of black paint (see exact paint color below) really updated our very traditional front door (note: the inside window trim is going black-the final photo is at the end). My favorite part is how the beautiful paint makes the lattice privacy window covering I put on the window show up more.
FYI-we are hanging a light fixture on the front porch tomorrow from that recessed light (see at end of post). Did you know that is possible using this recessed light converter kit? Final photo of our painted door all decorated for Halloween is at the end of this post.

Okay so here’s the garage also looking fantastic after Rick put 2 coats (no primer) of this black paint on the garage in less than 2 hours. It was windy so it dried fast 👉🏻👉🏻👉🏻 BEHR MARQUEE EXTERIOR IN BLACK SEMI-GLOSS.

How to Paint Your Garage Door Black Tutorial
PAINT USED ON BOTH THE FRONT DOOR AND THE GARAGE DOOR:
BEHR MARQUEE EXTERIOR IN BLACK SEMI-GLOSS
- Sand the garage door lightly with 100 grit sandpaper lightly, and then wipe it off with a damp cloth and let it dry.
- Prep the area with drop clothes, and tape any hardware..
- Cut in the outside edges with a 2 1/2 inch paint brush like this one my husband recommends, being very careful not to paint beyond the weather stripping. TIP: You can push in the garage door while painting to get right up to the weather stripping, but don’t go beyond.
- Cut in each square with your brush where the garage door squares are indented so you can roll the flat parts next.
- Use a small 6 inch paint roller like this one my husband recommends to finish off the rest of the first coat painting evenly across the entire garage. TIP: Watch for drips and lightly roll over them if you see one develop.
- Let first coat dry 2 hours (longer if below 75 degrees, but don’t paint if lower than 50 degrees).
- Do steps 3-5 again.
- Open door and let it dry as long as you can, the longer the better.
- Any questions, just let me know below.

One last photo to share of the front door painted and decorated for Halloween, because this is what led us to paint the garage door… the new hanging light fixture really sets the mood 🙂

Hi!
The link to the roller didn’t come up. Can you just tell me if it is a foam roller or microfiber? Rollers can be tricky and I want to be sure I use the same kind because I don’t want to mess this up!
Thanks so much.
