I am completely guilty of creating patriotic decor that ends up looking a little over the top. In other words, tacky 🤭. Sorry, I said it, but please know I adore and respect our beautiful American flag-in fact, that’s my point. The American flag is so beautiful that it really doesn’t need anything to get its point across. What I’m trying to say is, sometimes just a simple little flag stuck in a hat is enough, and I think when you are finished reading “How to Create a Simple Patriotic Beach Hat Wreath” you’ll know what I mean.
Where to Hang a Patriotic Beach Hat
This cute hat idea did not turn out exactly the way I pictured it in my head (it never does, right?). To be candid, we have a few things going on (big news about our house coming soon), so my mind isn’t working at 100% decorating capacity 😆. We also have 2 baby birds sleeping in our current wreath on our front door, so I had to think outside my usual spot. After about 2 hours, I finally figured out that our pantry door was the perfect location (see updated photos below where I was finally able to add the wreath to our front porch).
Even with all of the obstacles, I still think this “little wreath hat” idea is very versatile, just like a “little black dress”. You could honestly dress it (or stick the decor items in behind the ribbon no glue required) differently throughout the spring, summer, and fall:
SPRING: BLACK RIBBON-FAUX TULIPS/DAFFODILS
SUMMER: BLACK RIBBON-AMERICAN/CANADIAN FLAG
FALL: BLACK & WHITE CHECKERED RIBBON- w/ FAUX MUMS
Where I Found the Perfect Beach Hat
So, where did the beach hat come from, and why did I choose black? I ended up buying this black beach hat from Amazon (link below) for our vacation, but never used it. As you may know if you are a redheadcandecorate.com subscriber I absolutely adore black because it’s a powerful background for colorful decorating. Black is my go-to for not only my outfits (see us below 😉), but for our home because it allows details to shine without complication to the eye. At least that’s how I see it.

How to Create a Simple Patriotic Beach Hat Wreath
The wreath I purchased came with a thin braided trim that was completely glued to the hat, so there was no way for me to stick my flags into it. I decided to cut the excess trim off so you wouldn’t know it was there, and then tie a thick silk black ribbon around the hat into a big droopy bow. Then I went in for the final stretch 😊, and stuck in the little wooden flags. I love how the black hat brings out the gorgeous American flag stars & stripes, and our black kitchen cabinets to follow…
Before I go, I wanted to share these delicate, yet hearty, Lily of the Valley I pulled from our yard the day I took the photos of the wreath (4 days ago). I stuck them in this glass really quick just to give them some fresh water and realized later how pretty they looked all “twirled”. Just goes to show you can’t predict when things will turn out beautiful-it usually happens when you aren’t trying.
Update: Adding Patriotic Beach Hat Wreath to Front Porch
PS…Here’s our new front porch mat that I am so excited about! It stands out on our brick, and can be rinsed in my laundry room sink! With all of the spring tree droppings. this is a true blessing. I completely recommend it and it is a fantastic price for such a large mat. Here’s my safe Amazon affiliate link in interested: https://amzn.to/3lw9eo4Posted by
