How to Make a Dollar Store Christmas Ice Wreath

Ice, ice, baby! This “Dollar Store Christmas Ice Wreath” turned out way prettier than I ever expected. In fact, I nearly gave up at first because it wasn’t turning out the way I envisioned, and then my husband said, “You’ll figure it out, you always do.” Those words inspired me to keep trying (Thank you, Rick! ❤️). After a few hours of spreading glitter all over our dining room table (I also have a solution for that below), I finally narrowed this rather simple wreath process down. If you’ve never made a wreath before, this wreath tutorial is a nice place to start!

Here’s the frosty Christmas Ice Wreath hanging on our apartment balcony door…not bad for just basic dollar store supplies right?

The Dollar Store Ice Wreath Inspiration

Here’s how this all went down…we simply needed a new Christmas wreath for our apartment door this year because I repurposed our old Christmas wreath into this gorgeous Valentine’s Day Wreath. That was some cute repurposing, but what about when Christmas comes back around again 😆. Well…here we are Christmas 2023 and luckily the dollar store came through for me with flying colors, or should I say ICICLES. Inspiration struck right in the first isle when I saw all of their packages of clear icicles. I’ve always been fascinated by dangling ice on decorated Christmas trees, snowy winter homes, and even when trees get that ice coating on them from ice storms. There’s just something about the reflection of light that sparkles through, and makes me happy.

Here’s another finished photo of the ice wreath where I think you’ll be able to see all of the icicles I stuck in…that’s right I said “stuck in”. This wreath may look like it took many hours of gluing, and situating, but honestly it really was as simple as sticking things into the ground. I hope you will give it a try…

DOLLAR STORE SUPPLIES:

-1 foam wreath form the size is totally up to you

-a couple head pins

-silver ribbon (enough to wrap around your wreath form-you can return unused if necessary)

-plastic icicles found in packages of 5

-icy/snowy twigs (enough to cover your wreath well-you can return unused if necessary)

-3 large silver clip on florals (I found these silver Poinsettia by the florals on an end cap)

NON DOLLAR STORE SUPPLIES

-(hopefully you have)wire cutters or scissors if not

1. Wrap your wreath form with silver ribbon, and secure with head pins at the end (I liked using this mesh type ribbon from the dollar store). The idea is to have the base background silver so you can’t see the green through your twigs and icicles.

2. Use the little over lapped areas to tuck in your icy/snow twigs all going in the same direction around your wreath (I found it helpful to separate some of the twigs so you can manipulate them where you want them to curve). I didn’t use glue, but of course you could put a dab on the ends to help hold it in, before you tuck in.

3. Keep going all the way around the wreath with your ribbon and twigs, leaving a section that just has ribbon for your big florals to clip on.

4. Stick the icicles in after the twigs and push them into the foam to secure. Again, I didn’t use any glue but you can if you desire. I noticed that the ribbon helped keep the icicles in the foam. I tried to make the icicles look “pointy” on purpose, but had to be careful so it is safe for a door.

This was me getting a little ahead of myself trying to see if it was all going to work. It would be best to get the wreath wrapped in the ribbon completely before adding any twigs, florals, or icicles.

4. Clip on your big florals on the ribbon at the end (FYI this photo is just showing the clip-the wreath wasn’t completely wrapped and ready for them yet).

This was the wreath almost completed, I just needed to get a few more twigs for the bottom section. After the wreath was completed, I sprayed it all with Mod Podge Ultra (non aerosol spray) to keep all the glitter on the wreath where it belongs. Surprisingly this works really well…my wreath hardly sheds at all 🙌🏻. Stay tuned because next up is my annual Christmas decor giveaway, and then this year’s Christmas tour is after that 😉. Ice ice BABY!

I really like the icicle wreath. Northern Indiana is more gray and ice than snow in January and Feb. so this could stay up several weeks. Well done my friend!

  5. Bonnie says:

I love the wreath but I did not understand how you placed the icicles into your wreath. Could you send an explanation of placement of icicles? I was surprised that you did not add small lights.

I mention in the instructions to stick them into the foam. No glue required. I didn’t want to deal with turning lights on & off. It’s absolutely beautiful without them 😊. It sparkles ✨

Love the ice wreath, I still have a couple of wreaths, but will save this and maybe make it next year.
    Miss talking with you.
