Removing Cat Hair Trick

Facebooktwitterpinterestmail

I just made a tunafish sandwich for lunch, and I always give our 2 rescue kitties the tuna water.  At this very moment they are both licking their chops, and feeling mighty feline fine!  No, this is not a post about tunafish, but it is about cat hair removal 😯 .  If you have the honor of loving a cat, or any furry animal including a dog…then you know how horrible the pet hair can get, especially on furniture.  Lucky for me, and now you, I found the most amazing “Removing Cat Hair Trick” and I’m going to spill the cat nip all right here today!

Before I get to this “Removing Cat Hair Trick”, if you haven’t heard yet in my private decorating/recipe Facebook group, my husband and I participated in “TheUpskillProject” this past weekend.  Lowe’s is sponsoring this amazing event where homeowners win a makeover and we got to document the entire process this past weekend here in Michigan.  In addition, if you happen to be in the SE Michigan area, we will be participating at “TheUpSkillProject” workshop on this Saturday, August 25, 2018 at the Warren, Michigan Lowe’s.  We will be participating from 10am-2pm and learning (with you) tips & tricks in painting, plumbing, and even tiling of which scares me.  I hope we can meet there.

Okay…back to the cat hair chaos.  I thought this would be the perfect time to debut our new velvet blue accent chair in our front living room.  Did I just say velvet?  You’re thinking I’m crazy for purchasing a velvet chair when I have cats, aren’t you?  Well, I am a little.

This Removing Cat Hair Trick totally works! It's just a rock, but my photos prove it, and it's very affordable. It even works on rugs!

I found this gorgeous blue “club” chair on-line at Target.  I originally bought 2, but took one back because it was larger than it appeared.  If you recall, I had purchased a blue velvet sofa last year.  I wanted a chair to match, and this blue club chair was exactly what I was looking for.  It is so comfortable, and I love how it looks in this space.

GLADIOLUS TIP:  If you’re eyeing those stunning fresh gladiolus, I want you to know that they are one of my most favorite flower stalks to decorate with.  They are in season in Michigan right now (August) and I found these at a vegetable stand for $4.00.  You’ll need a heavy vase to put them in, and you will need to trim the stem before you put them in water.  I’ve heard about clipping the top to get them to bloom faster, and I use to do that.  However, this time I didn’t, and they bloomed just as fast.  One of my readers mentioned that she loves them, but some people say they are known to be funeral flowers.  That’s okay…let people think whatever they want about them.  Besides, there shouldn’t be anything wrong with loving funeral flowers.  They were chosen for a reason.

Uh-oh.  Party is over.  Everybody OUT.  Sylvia likes the chair, too  😯 .  (Here she is on the velvet sofa I purchased last year.)

This right side of the sofa is Sylvia’s absolute favorite spot to sleep.  All.  Day.   Luckily, Forest, our younger rescue kitty, doesn’t go on the couch very often.

So, I started searching for products that could help me with this really gross cat hair problem.  Not only could no one sit on my sofa, the cat hair was ruining it.

FYI-I will tell you, that I tried several things before I found this latest cat hair trick such as:

-spraying her with water mist while on the sofa-works, but only when you are there 24/7

-orange peel-works, but I got tired of dried up orange peel on my sofa

-sticky rollers-works, but very expensive and a pain to use

-tinfoil-works, but I don’t want tinfoil on my sofa

Okay, let’s leave those methods behind.  It’s time to try something different…

It’s ugly, it look’s like it was made from a piece of the moon, and it could even be part of your landscaping if you really wanted it to…BUT IT WORKS.  My photos prove it.

This ugly rock is my new best friend.  I came across one on Amazon while searching for cat hair removal products and when I first saw it, I thought it was ridiculous, but then I read the reviews.  The price was right, so I thought, okay, I need to try this thing.

All you do is gently slide it across your furniture and the cat hair (or dog hair) lifts out of the fabric and the rock grabs it making 1 pile at the place you sweep it to.  It even manages to put it into a pile that you can grab and throw out.  I’ve also used it on our stair runners where Forest likes to sleep in the sun.  It actually pulled out hair I couldn’t even see with my eye.  It also works on lint, but do not use this on clothes.  I tried on my leggings and it was too harsh for them.

If this isn’t proof enough, I showed this baby to the cleaning lady we had come 1 day for a special occasion, and she ended up taking it home with her.  She never brought it back  🙁 , so I actually bought a new one.  I’m telling you, this thing ROCKS!!!!

    hi julie,
i don’t know if you remember but a while back i asked you where you bought your sofa. i had been looking all over for a chesterfield. you put me in touch with jennifer taylor home and i did find a sofa i really love. it’s a lavender chesterfield from the la rosa collection. it’s gorgeous! thank you so much! i have a pomeranian with a very thick coat, so i had to retrain her to stay off the furniture. i thought that her nails would damage the fabric, and i didn’t want to take the chance. the fur doesn’t bother me because i would just vacuum it more often. i read your emails every day. i always look forward to see what redhead is up to next. ::))) . byw. your bathroom remodel is fabulous! thanks again and have a great evening.

WOW…..That rock is amazing!!! I have a rescue dog and cat that I love dearly, but the shedding from both of them is a lot to handle! I’m one that has bought the roller and like you said that gets expensive for the refills! So…thank you, thank you for sharing this product. I may buy several!! Lol!

    Julie,

First, love the chair! But OH MY GOD, The Ugly Duckling, I clicked right over on your link, and promptly added one to my Amazon cart! Wow, wow, wow! I have 1 hairy cat, and 2 dogs, short hairs, but one sheds like nobodies business. And of course, they all love my chair and our couch. I try sticky rollers, enh, it doesn’t get it all, and you can easily empty one entire roll before you even get below the first few layers of hair. I’ve tried vacuuming, nope. Rubbing with a towels, works best, but even then, doesn’t get it all. I’ve covered every surface with a towel, and tell guests, don’t sit unless you’re ok with a butt full of pet hair. This is genius, I’m super excited to see if it does work as you’ve demo’d, and if your couch looks that cat hair free, wow…thanks so much for this post!

Looks like the pumice stone I got to remove calcium deposits from the toilet bowl–kind of a rough texture, but very effective for that purpose! Thanks for sharing…I’ll try ANYTHING!! LOL!

  8. Karen Farrell says:

    Is that a pumice stone?

    Hi, Julie!

The gladiolas look wonderful. They are my husband’s favorite flower but we, too, would hear the “funeral flower” comments. Grew them for years but since they need dug up before winter, we got away from them as we got older. Your photo made me want to try them again, though! The hubby would be so happy to see them in our flower bed.

Also considering that rock you recommend. I like the way you keep things “real” about your life.
    Keep up the inspiring work.

Thanks for sharing this. I plan to order one. We have a beautiful long-haired part Ragdoll cat who is spoiled rotten and rests on whatever piece of furniture he wants! Love ‘im anyway!

Ok. I’m buying one. Funny, when I first saw the rock I thought it was a sponge, which made me remember that I once bought a sponge that was supposed to remove cat and dog hair. I think it worked ok, but not great. Your velvet furniture is gorgeous. I love the colors you are using.

Ok now I do need to try this Ugly Duckling! My fur baby is a Boston Terrier and although they have short hair they do shed…and that tiny little hair is very hard to remove from my furniture. I don’t even let him get on the furniture in my more formal living room although he is allowed on all the furniture in the family room, he still rarely gets on it but there’s always hair! Thanks for sharing this!
Please…where did you get your “dress, gown” painting?? That is just gorgeous!
