Decorate with Maps | By Decor Adventures

Hi everyone, it’s Jessica from Decor Adventures. After Julie showed you the new map she created for Valerie last week, I thought about how much fun it is to decorate with maps. I’ve done my share of map decorating around my place and wanted to share them with you.

I love maps. They remind me of places I’ve been and where I have great memories, but also of places I’d love to go. Plus they are fun to use in home decor and can work in a living room, kid’s space, or an in between area like a hallway.

I found a large antique-looking map at a bookstore of all places and wanted to put it up in our living room. Of course framing something this size professionally can cost you more than $150 so we had to figure out a way to DIY it. We ended up adhering it to a large poster board and making a simple frame for a fraction of the cost. Read about it here.

Also in that room I have some other framed maps. One of them is actually a piece of fabric I found on clearance. I had a square frame it fit perfectly in and it got added to the collection easily.

Living Room

Picking up maps is easy to do when you travel. For our honeymoon we took a trip to the Bahamas and I couldn’t resist a little memento to remember that fun time in our lives. It used to be on the mantel and around the house, but now it’s hung in the living room.

But we also have them in other spaces of the house. A while back I used this map of the US to pin all the locations we have been. Sometimes it feels like a lot, and then others I realize we should take more trips! Did you ever make a travel map? It’s fun to see all the places you’ve been, even if it’s just in your own state. All you need is a map, pins and some cork to get started. Read about how to make one here.

This photo is from my old apartment. Love the cranberry walls right?!

You can also use maps on furniture like I did on this desk. I had an odler printed atlas {remember when they used to print maps?} and the drawer bottoms in the desk were dirty. I wasn’t going to paint them so I decoupaged the maps onto the bottoms. It came out really cute and was a fun surprise when you opened a drawer.

If you don’t want to get very formal with hanging maps or furniture makeover’s aren’t for you, then maybe just tape some maps up on the wall like I did in this Pottery Barn map wall knock off. We had these neat pages from an old book that I put above the fireplace in a random pattern. This would look great with maps of different places and colors.

Maybe you’ll find a place for maps in your home?

Come visit me at Decor Adventures. I’m recently in love with navy and painted an accent wall in our old house foyer and am trying to decide what to do with a chair makeover. Come give me your ideas and find me on Facebook here.

Maybe next time I’m back here at Red’s it will actually be spring!

  1. I love these ideas! I just bought an antique map of the Deep South and have been looking for some ideas on how to use it.
