Butter Ball Cookies

Happy Thanksgiving!

Before I start whipping pies out today, I have a special recipe from a special guy.

I never met him, but I feel like I have.

He sure was handsome, and I’ve heard how he loved to cook.

My Grandfather…Cyril

Papa Cy

I have the original “Butter Ball Cookie Recipe”, that he hand wrote for my Mom when she married my Dad.

When I read it, I felt incredibly close to him.

Recipes travel through generations and bring family members together just like photos do.

There is a connection that develops that is strong, and very special.

Truly a gift.

Butter Ball Recipe

My Mom & Dad usually made the Butter Balls first every Christmas.

When I made these I had to hide them so I could do my photo shoot the next day when the sun was out.

My hubby and girls love them.

I hope you try them!

Oh my goodness I’d love to win this and start a new tradition in my home! I made a German cheesecake today which is a tradition in my family. It was a recipe that my mother got from a bakery when we lived in Germany. It is soooooo good! I can’t wait until tomorrow to have a piece… 🙂

I love that story! I had an old recipe handwritten by my grandma for some ‘original’ cookies. She gave it to my mom when my mom got married in 1942. It’s lasted all these years, but getting faint on the ink. I made copies of it, put it in a little side by side frame with a picture of my grandma and gave it to all my cousins so they could have a handwritten recipe from their grandma!! Everyone loved and treasured it. Those kinds of things are so special. Have a great Thanksgiving Julie! P.S. Yes your dad was very handsome!! And can’t wait to try the cookies!

  4. Isn’t funny how a recipe written in hand can evoke memories. I have one too but it is for oatmeal. Which my grandma made regularly my mom had it framed and hung in the kitchen for many years. I think handwriting is important. I have several recipes of my mothers that I have copied for my son. This recipe looks good. Will love to try it.

Hi Julia .. That incredibly handsome picture of your grandfather looks exactly like one I have of my Dad. Got a very warm feeling when I saw it too!.
As for these delicious cookies, they were a staple in my parents home during the holidays & have become one in my own home . So delicious and everyone scrambles for them. I have a very similar recipe that is hand written by my Mom too and I’m digging out all the favorite recipes for my annual homemade “goodie gifts” that friends and family look forward to. This recipe will surely be my first to bake. Merry Christmas!

I came across your recipe when I searched Butter Ball cookies on Pinterest. I have been unable
To locate my late mother’s recipe. I think it is so special that you have a copy of the recipe in your grandfather’s handwriting. I hold dear the copies of my mother’s handwritten recipes. I can’t help but remember all the holidays we baked together and smile. Those were special times!
So happy I came across your post.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Does this recipe use all purpose or self rising flour? It is very difficult to read, and on the card it doesn’t say/

  18. Wonderful cookies, sorry you didn’t get a chance to meet this talented chef. So happy to know you can share your Grandfathers yummy butter ball cookies. I added them to my Christmas cookie board ( I invite you to add them to my Christmas Cookie linky party going on through Dec 20) I’m looking forward to your wonderful giveaway too xo

  19. You are so fortunate to have this handed down to you. I asked my mother, before she died, where all her recipes were. She said she threw them out since she didn’t cook much anymore. I wanted to cry — and I did when I got home. Cherish the recipe and the memories of making them for your family.
