How to Update a Master Bathroom with Emerald Green Paint

While searching for our empty-nester forever home, the master bathroom in the house we ended up buying, is really what sealed the deal. You see…at our very first “showing” I remember walking through the double doors into the rather large primary upstairs bathroom, and my first thought was, “OH. MY. GOODNESS. This would be a dream come true!” My next thoughts were…all this needs is a beautiful paint color, and some “Redhead Can Decorate” decorating to go with it 😊. Welcome to our latest makeover reveal at our new home…”How to Update a Master Bathroom with Emerald Green Paint”.

The Before Photos of Our New Master Bathroom

How about a little back story, first 😉? When we viewed the house while the previous owners lived there, it was much cleaner than it was when actually got in. I’m not sure if they were upset that they didn’t get full asking price or what, but holy moly…they left the entire house a disgusting mess. In all the homes we have owned/sold, no matter what was going on in our lives, never did we, nor would we leave the home filthy like they did. So, here’s a warning…you just never know how folks will leave things, and be sure to discuss your concerns with your realtor.

YIKES, let’s get to those before photos!

Moving on from the disappointment we felt on our first real day in our new home, here’s how the master bathroom looked after we hired a full day large cleaning crew that cost us about $800 for the full house…

Here’s the same view below after we got everything moved in, and I was trying to figure out what I was going to do with this beautiful (CLEAN) master bathroom. Lots of ideas were floating around in our tub, I mean head, so you can see the new light fixture/faucet boxes below getting prepped…

Before the Paint…Updating the Window Treatment and Light Fixtures

TIP: PLEASE ASK BELOW FOR SOURCES I WILL BE HAPPY TO SHARE THEM WITH YOU.

The first thing I conquered for our master bathroom makeover was take down that typical builder type blind that was turning the upper rectangular window into more of an eyesore. After I took it down, I was able to imagine what I actually could do there. Since our bathroom is on the second floor, we really don’t need privacy in this window, so that helped. I ended up painting on Gallery Glass Paint to give it a little privacy, but honestly it didn’t require it. It’s difficult to see in the images, but it is there. All I did was clean the window, and then paint on two coats of their clear paint and it left a uniform textured effect I achieved with a 2 inch paint brush. After that was finished, I ordered the custom woven bind HERE. The window turned out just the way I envisioned, especially after adding real and faux plants. Okay, let’s take a look (before photo above, after photo below).

Here’s another angle showing off the large round mirror that really is what brings it all together…

While figuring out what color paint I desired for the room 😵‍💫, next was hanging a new light fixture over the tub. Yippee! Light fixtures are always my absolute favorite part of fixing up a room. I wanted something that I have NEVER seen before, so I went with this polished chrome diamond shaped beauty. You’ll notice below that we not only switched the recessed light over the tub to that cool hanging light fixture, but we also updated the vanity lights (thanks to Rick, my husband). Lastly, the toilet room exhaust fan/light was broke, so when our electrician came for that, he kindly recommended a new recessed light over the shower, which we agreed to. So, in summary, every darn light in the bathroom was replaced. Here’s another before and after…

Fortunately…time, lots of my favorite mirror cleaner, and hard work help heal.

So, I decided to go with very sleek “polished chrome” cabinet hardware because not only do I love this streamlined look, but I didn’t want to change the tub/shower faucets as they were already polished chrome. I’m not a fan of brushed chrome as I feel it reminds me of an old pipe 😆. I also liked the idea of glamming up this very traditional bathroom with polished chrome everything (notice all the light fixtures are shiny chrome now, too). Polished chrome for the win!

Finally…the “How to Update a Master Bathroom with Emerald Green Paint”! Well, to be totally transparent, you will notice in the photo down a bit of my husband painting, I originally chose the wrong color and you can see him painting over it. Whoopsie…it’s okay, though. Boy, did we end up nailing the color the second Emerald green paint try (I should mention my husband’s birthstone is Emerald 💚). This gorgeous paint color is absolutely stunning in person, especially for a more sophisticated, elegant look. I am not sure if the Wizard of Oz had anything to do with this, but this cool toned Emerald green makes me feel so fresh. I will warn you, if you are a warm toned green lover (think green olives)-this is not your color for the walls..

My husband put himself through law school running a painting company with our ex-brother-in-law (every close friend). Rick is a FANTASTIC painter and hardly uses a drop cloth, but don’t do that 😉.

-He used approximately two gallons of BEHR DYNASTY-DARK EVERGLADE (EGGSHELL SHEEN) for this rather large master bathroom.

-Using a 2.5 inch “angled sash brush” is a game changer because it is precise!

-2 inch blue tape can be used to help control the lines, but painting this dark color up against white, is not an easy task and takes a bit of experience.

-Old sheets make wonderful drop cloths.

-Rick “cuts” in first by doing all the sides and corners first. Then, he rolls the inside with high quality rollers.

-Let each coat dry for 1.5 hours.

How I Created an Emerald Green Master Bedroom/Bathroom Sanctuary

So, before I leave you guys alone…I just had to share what I decided to do with the double doors that lead from our master bedroom into the master bathroom. Let’s just say, they are no longer there 😲. The double doors were cool at first, but then they got in the way, were noisy, and let way too much sunlight in when we were trying to sleep 😵‍💫. I simply convinced Rick they had to go, and we are storing them in the basement for safe keeping. Here’s what I did to replace them…what do you think?

I should mention that I get that huge walk-in closet in back of the master bathroom to myself because Rick has his closets down stairs in his office. The built-in shelves go 9 feet on each side. I feel like a queen up here! Not sure I deserve this…

After replacing the cumbersome, loud double doors with soft, black velvet curtains, this is what I think…

If you’re interested in the idea of switching out your door(s) for a soft curtain, here’s the exact black-out curtains I use for not only the door, but our actual large ceiling-to-floor West facing windows. Our room is pitch black when they are closed, no matter what time it is. What a blessing when you have anxiety and trouble sleeping 😴

I love how the new bath looks so cozy even though it’s a huge room! The dark and moody looks fabulous in both rooms. The color scheme is perfect. Rick did a fabulous job painting!

    Are all your plants real?

    • Julie says:

Great question! Some are, and some are not. The only 2 real ones in the bathroom are the big “Majestic Palm” on the floor (Home Depot), and the big one on the shelf by the shower door.

This transformation is in keeping with all of your very talented and inspirational deign adventures. Though your choices are bold, they are so perfectly executed that anyone could picture themselves in any of your rooms. I know it ‘s a lot of work, and an investment of love and it shows. I look forward to all of your postings and wish you both good memories in your new home. Your hubby is talented and devoted to your life together, and it also shows. Good job Hubby.

  13. I love that green bathroom! It is stunning! Too bad you didn’t get to view the house before closing! That is so wrong to not hand your house over sparkling clean to the new owners. Sorry you had to go through that!

    • Julie says:

We did! It was much cleaner, but still their were signs we chose to ignore because we loved the house so much!
