With graduation parties, weddings, and BBQs popping up this summer, I thought it would be fun to share a cute idea for an appetizer display. I actually came up with this idea by chance when I was doing the dishes ๐Ÿ˜ณ. I was washing out last month’s Thrifty Style Team project “Milk Glass Flower Tower” when I noticed something super cool. It’s amazing how ideas blossom at the strangest times without warning isn’t it? I sure hope you enjoy learning ” How to Create a Milk Glass Fruit & Cheese Appetizer Tower”.

Did you know that thrift stores are the best place to find milk glass?

So, there I was hand washing my favorite thrift store milk glass from my latest affordable project with the Thrifty Style Team, and inspiration hit me like a hot flash ๐Ÿ˜‰. I was afraid to load all of the wet milk glass pieces into my drying rack because it’s not very sturdy, so I placed the pieces upright on the counter to dry. When I realized I was running low on room, I placed one of the pieces inside the other, and it got better from there. After I loaded all the pieces into one another, I just couldn’t stop imagining putting something in this gorgeous white tower. Boom!

I grew up with my mom using her milk glass bowl on our dining room table for a fruit bowl. Oh, how I wish I had that bowl…it had a braided edge on it and it was super big. She would put bananas, apples, oranges, etc. Maybe that’s where this fruit idea stems from, I’m not sure. What I do know, is that this appetizer tower was so easy to put together, and I think it could be used for so many different special occasions.

So, the secret to making a milk glass tower is to use use the larger pieces at the bottom, and work your way up to the top using smaller pieces. I mentioned above that I found all of this milk glass at our local thrift store. I got lucky that I had the right sizes, so you may have to play around with your pieces. As you can see below, I added a little bowl in so the top piece would stand out enough without sinking in..

Once I figured out how all the pieces would fit nice and snug just by placing in one another, I decided to add a white plate to the bottom, and then a cutting board under that to really ground the the entire tower. When I was happy with the shape of the entire column, I got busy adding in all of the fruit. Oh my goodness, I had so much fun. Then came the idea to add cheese, crackers, and I even pulled in another piece and filled it with nuts. I was really getting nutty.

Is Milk Glass Safe to Display Food On?

One last thing I want to cover is if milk glass is safe to put food in, and eat from ๐Ÿ˜ณ. I did some research just to make sure that it’s okay to put food into “milk glass”. I feel comfortable now, but here’s a great article on milk glass safety that can help you decide if you are comfortable. Don’t forget too, that you could line the milk glass with plastic wrap on the inside if you are worried.

Last Minute Styling Touches for Milk Glass Appetizer Tower

While I was finishing up, I decided to add white tapered candle holders I also found at the thrift store years ago. They have a milk glass appearance (hey, maybe they are milk glass?) and really worked great with the faux tapered candles I am addicted to. If you haven’t heard about my favorite remote controlled battery operated tapered candles…you gotta see these. I recommend them to everyone because I use them daily. I am truly not joking. I use them every night in our kitchen!
