Repurpose Your Christmas Cards for a Valentine’s Day Tree

Leave your Christmas tree up and repurpose your Christmas cards for a Valentine’s Day Tree that will bring joy well through February!

Do you still get excited when you receive a Christmas card in the mail? Not only do I get excited, but I tend to look at them several times throughout the holiday season while they are displayed on our mantel. So…this year I searched my brain far and wide for a clever idea to extend the life of each card we received. I hope you enjoy my new way to “Repurpose Your Christmas Cards for a Valentine’s Day Tree” as much as we are.

Go Ahead…Keep Your Christmas Tree Up for a Valentine’s Day Tree!

I bet if I did a redheadcandecorate.com subscriber poll asking who dreads taking down their Christmas tree I would get a 100% “YES” across the board. I mean, it really is an awful task isn’t it? It’s kind of like exercising…you put it off, but after you do it, you feel so refreshed 😆. Well, during these pandemic months/years there’s really no need to rush it, right? I can understand if you have a real tree (fire hazard), but otherwise the warm ambiance really does add such a cozy vibe to our homes.

So, let’s hit 2 snowmen with 1 snowball: 1. Repurpose those special cards in a cute and sentimental way by adding them to the tree (see below how I did mine). 2. Save time by keeping up the tree a little longer through February. Just leave only the red ornaments on the tree, and then add some of your Valentine’s Day decor from your stash including the cards.

Repurpose Your Christmas Cards to Decorate the Valentine’s Day Tree

Can you spot the repurposed heart shaped Christmas cards I put in/on our tree above? They may look a little different now, but if you’re careful, you can cut them just right so you have your special peeps photos right in the heart. I purposely made mine without personal photos this year so I could show you, but next year I will cut the card into a heart leaving family and friend’s family photos in tact đŸ‘‰đŸ»how sweet is that?!

For the cut-out “hearts”, I used the “fold” in the card to help give me a very even heart shape. I was even able to cut out words that coincide with Christmas and Valentine’s Day like “love”, “adore”, and “friend”. While I was doing this, the cards became even more special which they deserve, right? All that time & energy that went into sending those cards transferred into our beautiful Valentine’s tree. But wait…there’s more.

I also added “faux pine” extensions to a few of the branches and then rested red berries on those. The extensions really made the tree look more realistic and gave it a beautiful shape. Between the “feathery” limbs, and red accents with hearts, it really transformed the entire tree!

I took the tree to the next Valentine’s Day level and added the faux red roses I had in my stash. Wouldn’t white ones look pretty, too? I also switched out my styling around the tree and added my new favorite faux battery operated tapered candles (see source below), and that DIY chalkboard sign I made with chalk paint (my tutorial comes up next month for the sign). Lastly, my favorite part are the red roses stuck into the ice skates as the tree topper. Amazingly, the roses just stuck in there with no wire.

Quick Update on my Husband

Thank you to all who left Rick get well wishes and prayers on my redheadcandecorate.com Facebook page. I am so happy to report that Rick is almost back to normal. Surgery for his rather large, very unexpected kidney stone went well. He actually made one of his homemade pizzas last night, so that says it all. I am so thankful…

Thank you for your kindness~

Julie, I really like this year’s Valentine’s tree. With some planning this year’s Valentines cards can become next year’s hearts on the tree. I am also so glad to know the kidney stone business is over and recovery is on the way. Send a hello to your dear Buffalo parents from me!

Happy Sunday to you and Rick: Glad to hear he is better now, a very painful thing to have. I’m not on Facebook, so I didn’t know. Your tree is beautiful, well what else? Clever lady. I’m with you on not wanting to take the tree down, just did ours this week, so barren now. I have a faux fig tree, so might make some hearts and put them on it.Thanks for the info about the spice holder to grow the onions in, will see if I can find one (is there glass tubes in yours?) Did you get snowed in, like most of the East? Hope you are all fine and looking forward to warmer weather.
    Cheers, Bette

I simply adore your Valentine and Saint Patrick day trees. They are are fantastic like it creator. I sometimes pull out our two pencil trees, and decorate them for Easter, thanksgiving and other special occasions as well. Have not been able to do much lately. However, things are slowing down somewhat, and I am hoping to capture on that.
