How to Create a Rainbow Colored Glass Birdbath

There’s something about colored glass that floats my boat. When I see it at thrift stores (I scream!!!) take it home, and add it to my collection. Well, that collection is getting quite large, so I need to use it up. I already have a colored glass fountain (see below), so I decided a birdbath would be just as beautiful, and great for our bird friends. You won’t believe how easy it is to create a “Rainbow Colored Glass Birdbath”.

Collect Colored Glass for Your Birdbath

The first thing you need for your birdbath is colored glass plates, bowls, vases, or anything you can find that can lay flat onto another piece. Maybe you have a few candidates in your cabinets already? If not, check out your local thrift store. Look for colorful pieces that are fun, and even unusual. Think about your favorite colors, color combos, or copy me and do a rainbow 🌈. There’s no need to hurry, take your time finding pretty shaped pieces.

I had so much fun pulling this one together trying them in different poses. Doesn’t it look like they were all waiting to get together? They all fit together like a big puzzle. I actually put water in the big bowl, and the little top purple bowl, too.

TIP: USE A LARGE HEAVY PIECE FOR THE BASE SO IT CAN’T TIP OVER. ALSO PLACE BIRD BATH IN MULCH OR GRASS AWAY FROM BIG ROCKS JUST INCASE IT DOES TIP OVER.

Glue the Colored Glass for Your Birdbath

Once you have your colored glass collection, and you know how you want to arrange them for your birdbath, start gluing them together 2 at a time. I started with the orange and yellow vases, then added the red bottom vase, and bottom blue plate. Lastly, I added the green, blue large bird bath area, and the purples. Be sure to follow directions on the water proof glue I am about to recommend.

Probably the most important tip I can tell you for your glass birdbath is to use a “marine epoxy” for the gluing because other glues will not stand up to rain, and the outdoor elements. My husband is the one who taught me about this type of glue through his hobbies and experience. The marine epoxy I used comes in 2 different tubes, and you mix them like this…

After you mix the 2 components, you can brush the glue on with a tiny paint brush, or use a tooth pick. I did it both ways, and to be honest, the toothpick was easier because then you just throw it away. You can also scrape off any mistakes with a blade, or wipe them as you go. Just be sure not to glue all of the pieces at once, and allow them to dry in sections.
