DIY Rainbow Rocks

I’m going to rock you like a hurricane today 😆! Well, maybe we can leave that hurricane part off, and just “rock you” with these cute “DIY Rainbow Rocks” my son and I created just for the heck of it. Oh, and because we are still stuck at home for the 4th month in a row, and we really need some simple, inexpensive crafts to not only keep us busy, but help us deal with the chaos in the world right now. Anyone else want to join us? 🙋‍♀️

Sometimes a little crafting with your favorite peeps is all you need to help you get through a rough time. With that being said, I know not everyone knows how to go about doing that in an easy way. Folks think that crafting is stressful, and that crafts have to get all messy (no glitter here), and expensive (mine were free)…well not this craft.

I promise you, painting rocks can be one of the most relaxing, stress free, creative activities ever. What’s really special about these Rainbow Rocks is that you get to keep them afterwards, and put them in your plants/garden, on your window sill, or even give away as little gifts. I mean…it’s just cute no matter how you color it.

You may have missed my Rainbow Melon Cake a couple weeks ago, and you may have skipped over my Rainbow Door Mat, but I really hope you give this rainbow a chance. I also promise that this is the last rainbow post of the year, ha ha.

Just look how cute and shiny these Rainbow Rocks look in my Creeping Jenny plant. I just added these clover-like “creeping” greens to our flower planters and I’m praying they “creep” well where I have them. Maybe the Rainbow Rocks will bring them luck.

How to Make Rainbow Rocks

My son, who is in fact a very talented artist 😊, helped me with the rocks and let me tell you, I love hanging out with him. He sure keeps me laughing, and gives great design advice.

Now, although this is supposed to be just “Rainbow Rocks” which I really did plan on focusing on because I do adore rainbows, we did end up getting side tracked on different designs. I’m not at liberty to show them all 😆, but let’s just say we had some “rock therapy”. This just goes to show that you can draw/write whatever your heart is telling you to.

First, make sure your rocks are clean. Give those babies a bath and let them dry.

Next, use permanent markers to draw your design. FYI, I also tried chalk markers and they didn’t hold up as well.

The last step involves sealing them with glossy Mod Podge, but this is the tricky part. Be careful when you apply the Mod Podge because I had one that kept wiping off the color. You only need one thin coat (don’t keep brushing it over and over) and then let it dry and do the same to the back. Repeat this until your rock is shiny as heck.

One of the cutest ones we did was a rock shaped like a big coffee bean, and we painted it brown, and then wrote coffee bean on it in cursive yellow. It was so cute, but I believe the chalk markers I originally tried wiped off with the Mod Podge. So, go easy on the brush strokes, and have many rocks to test out. Permanent marker is best.
