Black & Gold Bathroom

Facebooktwitterpinterestmail

Welcome to our “Black & Gold Bathroom” makeover.  Sit back and enjoy the stroll through memory lane before I share the final reveal.  I am very pleased with the chic new look, and I hope you are, too!

I first walked into this 1/2 bathroom (which is located in the hall between our kitchen and laundry room) when viewing the house about 9 years ago, and I loved 3 things.  The size of the room, the huge window, and the beautiful vanity that looks more like a dresser to me.  What I didn’t like was the creamy white colored floral ceramic sink with gold faucet, and the vanity’s finish.  I could shoot myself now though, because the sink & faucet we replaced them with were copper and that was a huge mistake.  I will never get another copper sink, EVER.  FYI they are difficult to clean, and the color(s) the copper turns (including green  ) make me feel like it’s dirty.  I probably could have used the original sink and faucet, but that is water down the sink now.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo of the original sink and faucet, but this photo was taken after we took the ugly copper sink out of the vanity to spray paint it (I know-crazy), and right before I painted the vanity black.  I was trying to help a sorry situation.

I know what you’re thinking…yuck!

So, below you will see it after I spray painted the sink black and painted the vanity black.  It worked for a while until the sink began to chip by the faucet.  We honestly didn’t know what to do with it at this point without spending a lot of money on another drop in sink that would fit.  I was very annoyed with the entire oreal, so I avoided it for a long time.

I finally figured it out though, so hold on to those britches 😯 .  I began looking on line for sinks that go on TOP of the vanity, rather than the ones that drop in.  I was very surprised that they were fairy inexpensive and we didn’t have to deal with that hole because the sink would cover it up.  I was definitely on to something.

So, I measured around that darn hole so I knew how big to go, then I measured the vanity width/length and that wooden backsplash, and lastly I verified with my husband if this could be done with a new faucet, drain, hose(s), etc.  I am not too good in the plumbing department, but he is.  He gave me 2 thumbs up.

So, I ordered the sink, drain, and faucet on-line (see product information below in my source list).  They came pretty quickly.  When the boxes arrived I pulled out that sink faster than you can say, “Redhead needs to chill out it’s just a sink!”  I was just so excited to place it over that hole.  Would it fit?  Would it look good?  Would it work?

The answer to all 3 questions is, “Yes.”

Whoa!  It looks a lot different, doesn’t it?  Can you figure out what else I changed?  I mean, I know this is a different angle, but there are still a couple more changes.

Okay, well I’ll just tell you.  I switched out that mirror to one that I found at a thrift store and painted gold. I also spray painted the knobs on the vanity gold because I wanted them to pop.

How do you like our new “gold” faucet?  Isn’t she pretty (see source below)?  I absolutely love black & gold together.  It’s one of my favorite decorating combos.  In fact, I wear black & gold all the time with black t-shirts and gold hoops.

Here I am recently going on a date with my husband.  See the black & gold, ha ha…

This new black & gold look is chic, classic, and a little farmhouse, with a modern eclectic twist.  I am in love.

Sorry, I like the before. Weird but I do.

    • Julie says:

Hi Gail! That’s not weird! Ha ha! It’s okay, I have had a couple of folks say they like the before. I just had to get rid of that dirty sink. Thank you for being honest w me!!

  17. Pam Beck says:

I love the changes to this bath. They’e not hugh, but what a difference they made. The bath is beautiful! Also, I’ve really been noticing that your rooms, your style are not all the “white” for the farmhouse look. It makes me feel like some of the pieces I have are not all wrong or out-of-date. I have loved the primitive side and we have some antiques from family members, so I really can’t do all white even if I wanted to. Following your blog has made me realize, it’s not about the most recent trend, but what you want and love in your home! Love your blog! j

    • Julie says:

Good morning, Pam! Your comment made my day. Sometimes I’m asked what style I prefer and I think I actually enjoy little pieces of all of them. There’s no way I could just be one. My eyes would get bored. Thanks so much for your kind words!! ? I hope folks do realize they don’t have to follow the trends.

  18. Darlene says:

Aww…thank you for sharing your wedding picture.
Happy Anniversary to you both. You we’re stunning!

  19. Pam Beck says:

I sent a comment on your half bath and I really appreciate what you said to me about not going with the trends. I want to incorporate some new items and ideas in what I have, but not sure I have to vision or talent to do this. BUT, I have a question….did you every do the giveaway for those lights?

  20. Bethany says:

Love it! I’m always signing up for emails and never end up reading them, eventually unsubscribing. BUT yours is not going anywhere, I love seeing what you’ve done. I don’t know how you find the time to do it all.

    • Julie says:

That is a great point, Bethany! We work on the weekends a lot, but we enjoy it in some weird way ? Looking forward to some time off this week ? Thanks for stopping by!

  21. The bathroom looks amazing!!! … Happy Anniversary!

    Hi Julie:

Just saw your black vanity and I love it. I have a black marble top and oak cabinets, which I want to paint black. Yours looks great, so will give it a try soon.
I hope when you move you will still have your site. You have some wonderful ideas for people like me, who doesn’t have too much imagination.
    Thanks, Bette
