DIY Wood Tongue-and-Groove Siding Wall (Laundry Room Makeover Part 2)

Clean slate.  I have a clean slate, guys!  I wiped my slate so clean you just won’t believe it’s the old slate, just clean    Does that even make sense?  I think it will once you see the “DIY Wood Tongue-and-Groove Siding Wall Laundry Room Makeover Part 2”.  Let’s not waste time blabbing.  Let me show you it.

Here’s a little reminder of what it use to look like.  Hideous I tell you.  I think I must have been eating too much sugar or something.  That wallpaper was the worst.  That’s okay though, we all make mistakes with decorating.  If you don’t, then you really don’t know what you love in my honest opinion.

I was so happy to see that wallpaper go bye bye.

I know a few of you have been waiting very patiently for this next step in our laundry room makeover, so thank you for sticking (no pun intended) with us.  When I was trying to figure out what to do on that large main window wall in the laundry room, I just kept picturing it white.  I think all of that busy wallpaper just made me want it white.  However, painting it white sounded too easy and too boring  😀   I wanted texture.  I wanted COOL-ness.

So, we decided on a wood tongue-and-groove white siding.  I want you to know that this is not shiplap.  It is actually very similar, and my husband and I have had many discussion on it.  Shiplap boards rest on top of one of another overlapping, while tongue-and-groove siding interlocks.  They are very similar and it does confuse me a little.

So lets take a look at the finished wood tongue-and-groove sided wall (after we painted it of course)…

I told you I have a clean slate.  It’s the cleanest slate in town folks.  I am absolutely in love with the “tongue-and-groove” look.  It’s a little on the farmhouse, rustic side and of course it will always be a classic look. It adds texture, charm, and personality.  I think it might even add depth to the room.

You may have also noticed some other differences in the room?  Here, take a another look…

Bingo!  We painted the cabinets, too.  I originally painted them from dark oak when we did the ugly wallpaper thinking that if they were white, they may look better up against the ugly.  It helped a little, but I made the mistake of distressing them on the edges.  Do yourself a favor and don’t do that to cabinets.  A dresser, sure, but not cabinets.  Here’s what they looked like before, with the old knob on the left (yes I switched the knobs, too).

Here’s that clean slate again all finished…I love this classic clean look so much I could just look at it all day.  They look like diamond earrings to me 😯

If you’re interested in where I purchased these pretty knobs here you go…

Crystal Glass Cabinet Knobs

I also happen to have a matching glass door knob on the closet/pantry we have in there.

Glass Door Knob Information

After I figured out the knobs, I started thinking about the other accessories such as the light fixture above.  Hmmm…do I switch it or not?  I mean, it looks fine I think.  We had to paint the ceiling, so that is why it is unscrewed on top.

Well, I can’t tell you what I did because that is for the final reveal 😀 .  Before we get to that final reveal, we still have the 3rd reveal coming up next Friday.  So, yes there are 2 more reveals coming up for our laundry room makeover.  Next week it will be all about the floor.  Yes…the floor!  I need a rug guys.  I can’t have my kiddos coming in this entrance without a rug, so stay tuned.  You are going to flip when you see the one I chose.  Lets just say it is very colorful.  Then for the final reveal I will be decorating the entire room {YIPEE!!!) and putting back my laundry baskets.  I can’t wait.

DIY Wood Tongue-and-Groove Siding Wall Tutorial

 Supplies:
(some supplies are highlighted to sources)
tongue-and-groove wood siding
miter box saw
2/4 to 2 inch 18-gauge Brad Nailer (if you do not have one, use finishing nails, a hammer and nail
punch)
24’ tape measurer
level
pencil
-partner to periodically assist with measurements installation of the first course of siding.
1.  Remove any existing molding in the area where you will be installing the siding (save the pieces for later if re-using).
2.  Begin on the bottom of the wall by taking a level and drawing a straight line as a reference point.  The  line should be located at the bottom in a way that allows for about ½ of an inch of clearance between the floor and the first piece of siding you will install.  You will need a partner to make the line and install the first course of siding.  If you are working alone, use a nail to hold the level up on the wall at one end while you make your reference line.  You can also use a nail to hold one end of the siding up to get started while you attach it to the wall.
3. Measure the area you plan on installing the first piece of siding to.  Begin your measurement from the corner of the wall to the opposite corner and cut the siding to fit using the miter box.
4.  To install the siding, make sure you put the tongue side up.  The tongue is the side with a lip.  You will want the groove side of the siding to be pointed downward.  With your partner, (or nail on one end of the wall as a shelf to rest the siding on if working alone), line the siding up with your reference line and make sure it is level.
5.  Next, use the Brad Nailer to nail the siding in place starting on one end working to the other.  Nail the siding at the base of the tongue so that the nail will be hidden when you place the next piece of siding, groove side down, over the tongue of the first piece of siding.
6.  Next, measure where the next piece of siding is to be installed.  Repeat the process by placing the next piece, of siding, groove side down, onto the tongue of the initial piece of siding below it.  Make sure the groove of the upper piece covers the tongue of the initial piece of siding completely.  The nails installed in the tongue of your first course of siding should not be showing.
7.  Nail your second course the same as the first, at the base of the tongue so that the nail will be hidden when you place the next piece of siding, groove side down, over the tongue of the siding.  Repeat for each piece you install.
8.  Once your wall is completed, install molding at the floor and ceiling and if desired at the sides.  Caulk gaps as needed and paint (we used Behr “Swiss Coffee” -satin sheen).  If you make a cut and have a gap too large to caulk, use wood putty to fill in the gap and smooth before painting.
Important TIP:  When you encounter windows, cabinets, or any other obstacle that you will have to custom cut the siding to fit around, measure the total length of the siding you will need regardless of the obstacle.  Next, with a spare piece of siding placed temporarily over the groove of the previously installed piece, mark where you will need to remove siding at the obstacle by marking a horizontal line where you need to cut to, so that your siding fits over the cabinets, window, etc.  Next, measure from the beginning of the obstacle to the end to mark the section of the siding to be removed.  Make appropriate cuts to your siding and install in the same fashion as indicated above.

Love tongue and groove. Great job.

  9. Lori says:

I kinda liked it unpainted! But the white does look very fresh. If you were to leave it unpainted you’d probably want to do some sort of sealant so you could clean it, huh?

    • Julie says:

I liked it unpainted, too! We thought about it for a bit, and decided we have enough stained wood (planked ceiling, planked wall, island top, wood indoor shutters, beams, etc.) We needed some fresh ?

I am sooooo jealous. First of all, your laundry room is a ROOM! Not a tiny area with a diagonal wall facing the w/d. It’s beautiful! Don’t know what you’re going to do with the floors because these are beautiful already. Mine is builder grade linoleum. (insert sigh here….) I’m planning on doing something, just don’t know what.

    • Julie says:

Hey Linda, Did you know you can paint linoleum floors? ? Thank you so much for your nice comment! -Julie

  13. carol says:

Oh Julie, I left a comment about the awesome salads; they were both awesome! Love the olive/celery combo; very tasty. I commented about growing up in a household where Dad cooked. You said “he still does at 82”. Your parents are wonderful; love their comments. They’re so proud of you. Have a great week end.

    • Julie says:

When you posted what you were going to do to your laundry room, I said to myself, “why mess with something already so beautiful?” I should have known better, because you are so talent and a genius designer, you will come up with something that so many would never think of. You did it, fabulous, lovely, so-so ‘can I have this look too’ beautiful. Thank you for always nailing it, and sharing it with us.

Girl; you hit a Home Run. The whole laundry room is gorgeous. So gorgeous in fact that I would go around the house just to see what dirty items are laying around just so I could go and do some laundry in such a beautiful room.

Love the tongue and groove wood siding; even unpainted.
Just have to remember to remove all scanning labels/ staples before painting, staining, etc.
