There I am every morning in my skivvies, at my stovetop, cooking my fried egg. About 1/4 of the way through, I look at the egg and it looks very unfinished. Without even thinking about it, I open the cabinet to the right of our cooktop, and I grab one of which seems to be millions of salt & pepper shakers. I shake a little salt on the egg, put it back. I shake a little pepper on the egg, put it back. I flip the egg, whip it on my plate, throw some toast on there, and all seems right with the world.
Except, wait. It’s not. There’s one problem. Did you miss it? Julie has too many salt & pepper shakers. That’s the problem, here folks. Her cabinet is over flowing with salt and pepper shakers and she has no idea how it got this way. There’s cute ones, there’s little ones, there’s even a few ugly & empty ones. Julie hoards “collects” salt & pepper shakers. She’s out of control.
Until now. Thank goodness Julie came to her senses and finally freed all the salt and pepper shakers from captivity and made this darling “Salt & Pepper Shelf”…
Good move, Julie.
I mean, lets face it. Salt & pepper shakers are important. Most peeps ignore them. I think they are not only useful in our every day cooking lives, but they are cute. Like an old married couple. Two best friends, together till the end. Do you have favorite ones in your house? There are no 2 alike. Ever notice that? Some let too much out, or not enough, yet some have a perfect sprinkle.
So, if you follow me…you may recall, the removable shelf was already there. We installed it right after we finished our DIY real Brick Backsplash. It’s simply a stained 1×4 pine wood board from Home Depot that is attached with an L bracket in the middle screwed into the mortar, and 2 pieces of black wood under either side of the board screwed into the cabinet to hold it up.
I love that I can switch things up on that removable shelf. Especially for the holidays.
Here it is again with the salt & pepper shakers. You may notice the knife rack, too? I talk all about that HERE.
They kind of remind me of a parade…
If you like my salt & pepper shakers, I list most of the sources below. I need to go eat my egg now.

That is one Big YAY. I love it. Your shakers look so great sitting there, Plus they are handy when needed.
I also have a collection of S&P Shakes; displayed in display case, on shelves, in kitchen cabinet, on my dining room hutch, etc., etc., etc.
Hi Colleen, Thank you! ~ Julie
Yay – Love it!
I like it! The things you love should be out of the cupboards! I really like that you can change it up easily and have a whole new look.
I say yah. I like a shelf you can decorate with anything you want. Display what you love and decorate according to the seasons and holidays. Love your colorful shakers.
Totally agree, Carol! 🙂 Julie
mmm….sorry. NAY –
Looks to busy for my taste…
No worries, I appreciate your opinion! Thanks for stopping by 🙂
Yea. Love the shelf adds a new dimension.
The new look is much improved. Good job.
I like the new look. Seems to fit it beautifully with the rest of the kitchen. Well done!
Yay!!! My Aunt Connie had almost 200 salt & pepper shakers displayed in a glass display cabinet in her old farm house. She had so many that she gifted her collection to my sister before she passed.
Hi Jan, What a sweet story! 200 is a lot!!! ~ Julie
I love that nook for your stove. I think it is too large an area for all of the low level shakers. Put some taller kitchen or decorative pieces in with them and perhaps have a some vintage recipe box (just an example) to set some of them on to give height at intervals. You have so many good decorating ideas and fun stuff that you can “highlight” your collection with in order not to let them get lost in the space. By the way, I love the sunflowers and the picnic basket.
Thanks for stopping by, Rosie! Don’t worry, the shakers were just for fun and probably won’t stay up there too long. Have a great weekend! ~ Julie
Hi Julie!
I totally enjoy your website and all the pictures you post of before and after. You have given me motivation to get started on a few projects in my own home, so thanks! I started with the magnetic knife strip and I love it. Organization is one of the keys to happiness and peacefulness. Keep up your great work and I will keep gleaning ideas from you!
Julia

I agree with Carol, I too love the shelf, because beside the beautiful S&P shakers, there are so many things you can put there too. Known how talent you are, you will be doing that in the future, and whatever it maybe, it will be breathing.
I like both – it is just nice to have the option to change things up as you need a lift!
Love it ! Keep it. I collect usual drink glasses. Mostly booze ones. Lol ! I have been looking for n idea of how to display them. Excellent shelf idea.

Yes, keep it. Also, I have a knife rack too by my stove. LOVE IT
It is the only way to store them. I have 5 grands from ages 5-12 and it is comforting that they have to find it to use it!
Thank you, Edith! ~ Julie

It’s a nice change but I prefer the original. That’s the beauty of it. You can change it all you want.
