Thrifty Mirror Makeover

Welcome to my fun “Thrifty Mirror Makeover”!

It was a huge show room full of thrift store items and I spotted this large beveled mirror in the corner hanging up with several other large wall art pieces.  When I walked up closer I noticed the fair price and the details in the wood.  I lifted it to see if I could judge how heavy it was and boy was it ever.   This thrifty mirror was gorgeous.

The price was even more gorgeous.  $39.99 and worth every penny in my personal opinion.  I forgot to take a photo of the back, but this baby was put together extremely well.  I bet this originally cost the previous owner a few hundred bucks.

So, I flagged my handsome husband down and he agreed it was a keeper.  We got in line and brought it home.  On the way home we discussed what color I should paint it.  At first I was thinking all sorts of fun colors like bright purple and kelly green.  Then when I got it home, I noticed how difficult it would be to paint the inside ornate molding.

Gold Mirror

So, gold seemed like the perfect option because of the gold-ish colors already present.  I’ve been really loving gold and brass lately, so I bought some gold spray paint on line here and waited for it’s arrival.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I had already asked my husband and his buddies to take down the huge mirror we had over the mantle.

I ended up replacing it with this one, but never felt that great about it.  I also fell out of love with the lantern hanging there.  So, you get the idea.  I knew this would be a perfect location for the freshly painted thrifty mirror.

Cozy Christmas Mantel

Once my spray paint arrived, I got busy in the garage.  I put on 3 heavy coats of gold spray paint letting it dry in between each coat for a day.  If you look closely, you can see how I covered up the ornate inner molding.

We were all shocked at the results.  It turned out so pretty.  The gold spray paint worked so well!

The mirror fit perfectly over the fireplace in our living room and now I can decorate it any way I like.   I have a Detroit Homes Magazine shoot coming up at the end of the month so this mirror will get into the action!

Do you have any old mirrors you could paint gold?

I like that mirror! I love that you left the detail trim next to the mirror the original color when you painted it gold. I think that adds interest and depth. You did good finding it at that price, too!

I like it much better than the other. However I think it would have been better to leave it alone . The red in the original would have picked up the red in the brick.

Thank you, Lorraine! It’s so nice to get feed back. These photos of mine- do not do it justice. I can’t go back now, lol. What do you think about purple? I’m totally serious. Have a great Sunday XO

I think It’s beautiful sprayed gold. I love mirrors & have them all over my house. Some are gold, one has black paint with gold, one is a sort of weird brownish goldish shade, and some are hung and some don’t have a home yet, but they will (when I get organized lol). Actually, they have homes-just not on a wall. Anyway, when I saw the first picture of your new treasure, I thought it was cherry colored wood w/gold trim. Either way, it’s gorgeous. I love your style – cozy & sophisticated at the same time – the NY/MI vibe.

Not surprise that this mirror is so beautiful now, because you always nail it with your DIY Projects.
