Lets take a break from all of the white pumpkins in blog land today and learn about this white “DIY Paper Roll Message Board” we hung in our kitchen.

This thing is so cool.

It all started when the kids were little.  In case you didn’t know, I have 2 little artists.  Okay, they are definitely not little anymore, but they are definitely artists.  I’ll share some of their work at the end of this post so you can see what I mean.

So, as I was writing…when they were little I bought them this wooden paper dispenser that came with 2 very large rolls of white paper.  They loved it and have used it ever since.  Occasionally, they pull off a large sheet of it and draw for hours on end.  Then I display it.

Lately, I noticed that there was only a wee bit of paper left on that second roll.  I knew I had to do something.  Either order more paper, or watch it sit there and never be used.

Then I came across this..

But look at that price.  $79 is a bit much for something we really already have.  I knew I could transform our paper roll dispenser into a “Paper Roll Message Board” with just a few tweeks.  The kids could still get their paper from here too.  It doubles as both.

Lets take one more look and then I’ll tell you how.

Okay…so now that you know what I have to get done today…I’ll tell you how easy this was.  If you don’t own a wooden paper roll, you can purchase one here: Wooden Paper Roll

I have to be honest, when I first lifted this baby up on the wall, the paper roll fell out and hit me straight in my face.  That hurt, man.  So be careful.

I knew then that we needed to screw the dowl in.  Two medium sized screws went in easily after we used a bit for the hole first.  Using a bit to drill a tiny hole will help prevent the wood from splitting.

So, obviously, to switch out the paper, I would now need to unscrew it.  No biggy.

Next came the painting part.  I most certainly could have kept it pine colored, but I wanted to paint it for some reason, so I did.  I used paint with the primer in it.

After a couple coats and drying time, I decided to use super affordable paint brown paper.  It’s painting paper used to protect things when you paint.

Then came attaching it to the wall.  We searched for studs, but the studs were on break, so we used mollies to keep this thing in the wall.  I put it up high so I can pull down the paper and write whatever I choose.  This is a great central location for us.  It would be cute with a menu on it for a party, too.

The bottom silver magnetic clips I had on hand, but you can find those at any office supply store.  The magnetic strip I found at a hardware store and it had adhesive on the back, but I still added 2 large tacks for an industrial finished look.
