You know me well enough to know…I love logs, stumps, wood.

Heck…even twigs.

Who WOODEN’T?????

DIY Stump Planter

 This was fairly easy.

Okay…I can’t lie.

It was a pain in the booty.

Do I still think you should try it?

Yes.

Just use a very old, rotted stump.

Ours sat out in the elements (blizzards, rain, and even a tornado) for years.

Probably about 4 years to be exact.

The idea here, is to find a stump, or a big log that is soft in the center.

My hubby started this one out for me with a chisel and a hammer, and then I finished it.

I suppose a screw driver would work too.

It takes a little bit of strength and patience.

Chisel sideways, then down, then repeat.

Eventually, chunks come out.

You end up with a hole that is large enough to fit your soil and flower of choice.

You can also drill drain holes, but I didn’t.

It’s doing fabulous out there weeks later.

Easy Stump Planter

After a couple seasons this will rot the entire stump and we will burn it.

Until then…I love it.

We have three oak stumps on our porch courtesy of Hurricane Ivan that I’ve been using as plant stands for several years. My husband will hate me for it, but thanks for the ideas!! I especially love the candle holder!!

My neighbor cut down some sweet gum trees–very green wood with lots of sap. He cut the stumps the right height to use around the fire pit, but they are to gooey to sit on! I got some old tshirts, sewed across the shoulders and around the sleeves to make them like tubes, and can fit them over the stumps. They work like a charm!
