Well, the log obsession continues.
I’m happy sad to tell you that I am officially a log hoarder.
I can’t help it folks.
They just keep showing up on my front door step.
Well, almost anyway.
No matter what I do or say, they won’t stop.
So, I’m going with it.
I’ll just keep using them until I run out of ideas.
Here’s the latest…
You can call it an “American Flag Candle Log”,
or you can call it an “American Flag Log Candle”,
call it Fred the sailor,
either way, the result is the same.
It’s cute…I know.
Oh, look!
You can leave it unpainted if you like…
(I was tempted, but everyone does it that way)
Want to make one?
I’ll show you how.
It’s very easy, but my hubby did help me with the holes.
First, find a nice log.
(I have plenty, come on over.)
Fresh or old, it won’t matter.
Decide where you want your holes (mark them with an x).
Decide what size the holes need to be to fit your candles.
Be sure to use glass tea lights.
My candles are from Nordstrom Rack.
I don’t think the tin little cups are safe enough and pose a fire hazard.
Drill your holes with a big bit.
We used a 1 1/4 inch bit.
Wear eye protection.
My hubby is awesome.
If you decide to keep it unpainted, just sand it down in the rough areas, and add your candles.
I also contemplated ingraving our initials in it.
(that is a secret RCD tip!)
If you decide to paint it, plan out your design on a sheet of paper first.
I used paint with primer in it.
For the American flag design, I painted 2/3’s of it red first.
It took 4 coats.
Then, I taped off where I wanted the blue to begin and painted the last third blue.
Make sure it dries thoroughly.
Then, I used these foam brushes from the craft store to paint the white stripes.
I wanted a rustic look, so I wasn’t worried if they were uneven.
I made the star stencil with some clear plastic I had from a sticker wrapper.
I just winged the stars with no measuring.
I held the stencil in place while I gently tapped on the white.
The stars are staggered on the Amarican flag, so I was sure to do that.
Again, no need to be perfect.
Don’t forget to include the ends.
Then I sanded the heck out of it with hand held sand paper (any grit will due).
That was the fun part for sure.
It really finished it off nicely.
I ended up painting the glass on the candles white because the candles were very yellow.
I would probably skip that part next time.
Time to light that baby up.
