Storing Chives & Green Onions

Facebooktwitterpinterestmail

Easily store chives to last all Winter to add to scrambled eggs, soups, stews and even on a bagel with cream cheese!
Got Chives?
We don’t plant a vegtable garden at our house because we have too many trees, and hungry deer.
I do however grow tomatoes on our deck, and this year I decided to try Basil and Chives in our flower box
beneath our kitchen window.
They really flourished because even with the drought, I could still easily water them daily if needed.
I came up with a great storage tip after chopping some up for mashed potatoes one night.  I was afraid they may all disappear if a frost develops this month.
Here is what I did…
I washed them, chopped them up and put them in these little plastic storage containers I found at the grocery store by the paper plates.  I have mine in the fridge right now, but I think I may freeze them shortly if I don’t use them up.
Freezing them will keep them good for months.
These have such a fresh flavor still.
So nice to have on hand for almost everything
from soups to eggs.
Daphne & Valerie got a kick out of this…
they liked them on their tacos.
Then there are green onions…
I thought I would tell you about a tip I heard a couple years ago about storing those as well.
This really works.
I find if I don’t do this,
they turn slimy with in a couple days.  When you get home with them,
don’t wash them and roll them up in tin foil tightly.
Take them out and wash them as you need them.
They last for about 2-3 weeks in tin foil.

You can use the same method for celery as you did for the green onions.
Don’t wash, just roll up the celery in foil & use it as you need it. Lasts for weeks!!
