I'm Julie, a feisty, but rather shy redhead from New York, who moved to the Midwest to follow my dreams (and the love of my life). I'm passionate about decorating our home with my own unique affordable DIY style which is a mix of eclectic, contemporary, traditional, with a splash of country. I don't follow the crowd, but trust my gut instead. I hope to inspire you to try some of my ideas. I also love to cook and share my easy recipes. My family begs me to make my homemade meatballs and pizza. I hope you will try them and hang out with me for a while or subscribe to my e-mail letter here:

I read some place that you have done some things with silver leaf paint – any ideas? Where can I buy the paint – is it a spray? Thank you for your help.

Hi Julie – would love to try your recipe for the pulled pork burger. I don’t think we have Dr Pepper’s in Australia – is it like a Diet Coke? Look forward to your reply to I can try out the recipe. Many thanks Susan

  • Angie says:

Thanks so much for the video tour. I love your home. It has such character, warmth and beauty!
Can you tell me more about the coat hanger you made from keys? How did you attach the keys? My aunt gave me some antique skeleton keys that I have been wanting to display. This would be a cool project.
Also, I thought your refrigerator looked fantastic! What Rustoleum spray paint (color and type) did you use? I wanted to try the Rustoleum cabinet re-finishing kit, but my husband & I don’t quite have the energy/time for it. (We recently re-did our HUGE back deck with their “Restore” product and it turned out fantastic!) I also really like the mirror in your entry way. Where did you find it? Thanks again for the inspiration.

    • Julie says:

Hi Angie! The coat hanger is made from and old armoire door. The keys I found at Bed Bath Beyond. They are made to be coat hangers, or hooks. All we had to do was screw them in. The fridge was spray painted with Rustolium’s textured stone spray paint. The mirror is from Ballard Designs.

  • Debbie says:

Used your no roll pie crust for my pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving, easy and great taste.
    Thanks again,

Hi . I just brought my husband home from the hospital (so glad he made in time for Super Bowl) but I am not prepared for Super Sunday . Can you share your wing recipe? I would love to make some for him. He had a stroke but is recovery quite well. We are looking forward to getting back to normal. Love your site and thanks for all the wonderful ideas you share with us.

Hi Julie, I recently came across a site that you mentioned a friend of yours bought this lamp. I fell in love with the lamp but since have lost the page it was on. Do remember the site of your friend? I believe she bought it from but I have gone through that site and cannot find the one she has.

    Thanks in advance,

  • Barbara says:

I have just found your website and love it. My soon to be 15 year old son are looking to decorate his room this spring/summer and he wants a couch bed and the funds aren’t really there. I was wondering if there is a way to make a full size or a twin size bed into a couch bed. Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly apprciated.

  • Karen says:

    Hi Julie,

My new Home Depot carpet arrived yesterday and it is beautiful. I was just wondering when it will “relax”. Did it take your carpet awhile to lay flat? Thanks and I just love your style.

    • Julie says:

I had the same issue, Karen. Just put something heavy on the edges for a couple days. It will lay flat in no time!

  • Fawn letourneau says:

I would love to know what the name of the corian counter top you chose for your bathroom remodel, please, and thanks,

    Hi Julie,
I came across your blog through Savvy Southern Style and was impressed with your kitchen. My husband and I do alot of DIY ourselves and love getting the satisfaction out of the end result. I always admire people who can take on projects not just to save money but to say yeah, I did that! Anyhow, I am glad I came across your blog and look forward to seeing more projects. Take care!

    Good evening Julie,

I have silently been enjoying your site for a few years now. I am a scaredy cat when it comes to design, so I am living vicariously through you. Maybe one day it will rub off!

Hi- I love your professional-looking decorating on a budget. I would love to know how you did your beams on the kitchen ceiling (I’ve searched your site but can’t seem to find where).
Thanks so much for your help!

    • Julie says:

We haven’t posted about the beams yet. We used 1×6’s from Home Depot, and then stained them. I don’t know the specifics because my hubby and friend did the work.

  • Arlene says:

Just want to say what a beautiful job you and your hubby have done! I love the kitchen! Heck I love it all!

  • Janet Ward says:

Thanks for the contest & your blog. From one redhead to another!
