Reupholster an Armchair

Facebooktwitterpinterestmail

Hello fellow DIYers, this is Carrie from Lovely Etc. and I am back to share one of the scariest DIY projects I have ever tackled. Not scary like spiders and scary movies. Scary because I jumped in having absolutely no idea how to pull this off!

When I was pregnant with my son, I really wanted a big cushy armchair glider for his nursery. But the beautiful, new ones cost major money and I was working with less than $500 for his entire nursery. So I had to improvise. I was lucky enough to find a great, big cushy glider on Craigslist in a neighboring town for only $40.

But of course there was a problem. Two problems actually. The color was a greenish-tan that went with nothing else in the room and frankly just wasn’t particularly attractive. And the previous owner’s cat had used the front of the chair as a scratching post so the upholstery wasn’t in great shape. It was 100% usable but certainly not the chair of my dreams.

I knew it could be amazing if it was reupholstered…but I was really scared that I was going to get the whole thing taken apart and have no idea how to put it back together. And perhaps an ugly chair was better than no chair.

But in the end, I read the few articles I could find online about reupholstering an armchair and went for it. And it worked! I ended up with the perfect cushy armchair glider.

And since I was able to pull this transformation off with no previous experience (while I was 7 months pregnant), I knew I had to share what I learned with anyone else out there who was dying to try reupholstery but scared to dive in.

I have a full tutorial for you at Lovely Etc. if you want to check it out, but my biggest piece of advice if you are considering your first big upholstery project is to be brave and go for it!
