Hello! It’s Carrie from Lovely Etc. here again and this time I am sharing one of my favorite pieces of DIY art.
I strongly believe that in the case of most DIY projects, bigger is definitely better. That’s why I made a giant arrow growth chart for my son, an oversized family silhouette art piece, and this enormous wooden sign. They each make a big statement – and that makes all the work that goes into them worthwhile! This sign definitely falls in the giant category at eight feet long and three feet high.
Technically my huge sign isn’t true subway art: instead of a list of places, it is a collection of my favorite wise old sayings. Everything from ‘all that glitters is not gold’ to ‘into every life a little rain must fall.’ They are all sayings that I believe and I love having them hanging on our wall. I love the history behind them and the years of wisdom they represent.
And yes, my husband and I may have quoted these sayings at one another a time or two.
My sign is made from an old piece of wood that I pulled off an old dog pen that was in our yard when we bought our house. But a piece of plywood from any home improvement store would work just as well. If you want it to look rough like mine, choose the plywood with the roughest texture at the store. Then you can further rough it up using steel wool, a hammer, chains, or any other tools you have on hand. (If you have kids, this would be the perfect job for them!)
For tips on how to complete the rest of the sign, be sure to check out my tutorial over at Lovely Etc. And for anyone wondering, the vintage cameras have all been collected over the past few years from yard sales and thrift stores. Definitely my favorite collection! Thanks for letting me share Julie!
