Clean slate. I have a clean slate, guys! I wiped my slate so clean you just won’t believe it’s the old slate, just clean Does that even make sense? I think it will once you see the “DIY Wood Tongue-and-Groove Siding Wall Laundry Room Makeover Part 2”. Let’s not waste time blabbing. Let me show you it.
Here’s a little reminder of what it use to look like. Hideous I tell you. I think I must have been eating too much sugar or something. That wallpaper was the worst. That’s okay though, we all make mistakes with decorating. If you don’t, then you really don’t know what you love in my honest opinion.
Here’s the first step in our laundry room makeover in case you missed it last month. Click here to follow our easy full tutorial: “How to Strip Wallpaper (Laundry Room Makeover Part 1).
I was so happy to see that wallpaper go bye bye.
I know a few of you have been waiting very patiently for this next step in our laundry room makeover, so thank you for sticking (no pun intended) with us. When I was trying to figure out what to do on that large main window wall in the laundry room, I just kept picturing it white. I think all of that busy wallpaper just made me want it white. However, painting it white sounded too easy and too boring 😀 I wanted texture. I wanted COOL-ness.
So, we decided on a wood tongue-and-groove white siding. I want you to know that this is not shiplap. It is actually very similar, and my husband and I have had many discussion on it. Shiplap boards rest on top of one of another overlapping, while tongue-and-groove siding interlocks. They are very similar and it does confuse me a little.
So lets take a look at the finished wood tongue-and-groove sided wall (after we painted it of course)…
I told you I have a clean slate. It’s the cleanest slate in town folks. I am absolutely in love with the “tongue-and-groove” look. It’s a little on the farmhouse, rustic side and of course it will always be a classic look. It adds texture, charm, and personality. I think it might even add depth to the room.
You may have also noticed some other differences in the room? Here, take a another look…

Bingo! We painted the cabinets, too. I originally painted them from dark oak when we did the ugly wallpaper thinking that if they were white, they may look better up against the ugly. It helped a little, but I made the mistake of distressing them on the edges. Do yourself a favor and don’t do that to cabinets. A dresser, sure, but not cabinets. Here’s what they looked like before, with the old knob on the left (yes I switched the knobs, too).
Here’s that clean slate again all finished…I love this classic clean look so much I could just look at it all day. They look like diamond earrings to me 😯
If you’re interested in where I purchased these pretty knobs here you go…
I also happen to have a matching glass door knob on the closet/pantry we have in there.
After I figured out the knobs, I started thinking about the other accessories such as the light fixture above. Hmmm…do I switch it or not? I mean, it looks fine I think. We had to paint the ceiling, so that is why it is unscrewed on top.
Well, I can’t tell you what I did because that is for the final reveal 😀 . Before we get to that final reveal, we still have the 3rd reveal coming up next Friday. So, yes there are 2 more reveals coming up for our laundry room makeover. Next week it will be all about the floor. Yes…the floor! I need a rug guys. I can’t have my kiddos coming in this entrance without a rug, so stay tuned. You are going to flip when you see the one I chose. Lets just say it is very colorful. Then for the final reveal I will be decorating the entire room {YIPEE!!!) and putting back my laundry baskets. I can’t wait.
Before I go, I promised a full “DIY Wood Tongue-and-Groove Siding Wall” tutorial, so here it is. My husband wrote it up for me, and he did a fantastic job. Well, okay, I tweaked it a little.

I am awed at the before and after (reason for taking the pictures to appreciate it even more!). What a large laundry room it is too. AWESOME job!! LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you, Julie! Have a great weekend!!
Are those folding doors I see over the closet area?
No, we took the folding doors down and made that closet into a folding nook. I store my laundry baskets there. The doors were in the way. The other door is a regular pantry closet door that’s on the other side of the room. Thanks for stopping by, Virginia!
Wow – that wallpaper was Really Something! Reminds of the time I put up orange clocked wallpaper. You’re going to Love doing laundry in the new space.
I hear you, Jan! What was I thinking??? ?
Ok..really jealous..a handy husband and an awesome laundry room.Love it!!!
Hi Lorri, You aren’t going to believe it, but he folds laundry, too ? Thanks for stopping over he will love this. -Julie
You hit the ball outa the park on this one Julie!!! What a huge difference one wall can make; the room looks bigger, brighter, and so fresh! Love the white cabinets; can’t wait to see the next reveal.
Forget the laundry room, how where the salads ?
Love tongue and groove. Great job.
Thank you Rhonda! I do now, too. Thanks for commenting. Big hugs!
I kinda liked it unpainted! But the white does look very fresh. If you were to leave it unpainted you’d probably want to do some sort of sealant so you could clean it, huh?
I liked it unpainted, too! We thought about it for a bit, and decided we have enough stained wood (planked ceiling, planked wall, island top, wood indoor shutters, beams, etc.) We needed some fresh ?
Looks awesome! Great job Julie and Rick! I love it!
OK, I missed the end result. It looks wonderful and definitely better than the wallpaper! Great job.
Haha!! So funny!!!
I am sooooo jealous. First of all, your laundry room is a ROOM! Not a tiny area with a diagonal wall facing the w/d. It’s beautiful! Don’t know what you’re going to do with the floors because these are beautiful already. Mine is builder grade linoleum. (insert sigh here….) I’m planning on doing something, just don’t know what.
Hey Linda, Did you know you can paint linoleum floors? ? Thank you so much for your nice comment! -Julie
Oh Julie, I left a comment about the awesome salads; they were both awesome! Love the olive/celery combo; very tasty. I commented about growing up in a household where Dad cooked. You said “he still does at 82”. Your parents are wonderful; love their comments. They’re so proud of you. Have a great week end.
I remember now. I swear, Carol my memory is getting so bad!! I just went to Home Depot, picked out 2 plants for indoors, got side tracked and left them there ? Thank you for your sweet words. XO
Love, love love this Laundry Room, what a handy hubby, lucky lady. Can’t wait to see final reveal. Great job. ?

Julie, this is just flippin fantastic! What a beautiful difference!
Thank you, Kaycee!! Always so nice to recieve your comments!
You are leaving me almost speechless, and unable to close my mouth. Why? When you posted what you were going to do to your laundry room, I said to myself, “why mess with something already so beautiful?” I should have known better, because you are so talent and a genius designer, you will come up with something that so many would never think of. You did it, fabulous, lovely, so-so ‘can I have this look too’ beautiful. Thank you for always nailing it, and sharing it with us.
Hello my friend, Ivory! You slways make me feel so good. Thank you so much for such kind words. So hsppy you like it! Next Friday comes the rug! ?
This turned out beautiful! Especially paired with that black trim! I totally agree with you about the distressing on the cabinet. I just wish our laundry room was this beautiful 🙂
Hello, Meg! I forgot to mention the color of the trim. It’s actually dark brown. It does look black in the photos, though. So happy to hear you like it! Can’t wait to share the full reveal! Hope youcan stop over XO -Julie
Girl; you hit a Home Run. The whole laundry room is gorgeous. So gorgeous in fact that I would go around the house just to see what dirty items are laying around just so I could go and do some laundry in such a beautiful room.
Love the tongue and groove wood siding; even unpainted.
Just have to remember to remove all scanning labels/ staples before painting, staining, etc.
Thank you, Colleen! Our laundry factory never stops running around here! I do 1 large load a day and it helps keep things under control ? Your comment made my morning. Have a great day!!
Love the laundry room. What paint color is the paint you are using? It is really clean and bright. Also, am in love with the new rug. Would enjoy doing laundry a bit more with it! Great job!
