Faux Birthday Cake?

I have to admit, when the idea of a “Faux Birthday Cake” entered my head it sounded a bit like a tease.  I mean, why not just make a birthday cake, light the candles, sing the song, devour the cake?

Well, to be totally honest, I had to come up with a fun idea using these cute Make It: Fun ® Foam Project Bricks for our Make It: Fun Crafts challenge.  I was stumped for a few days until I decided to make the garland you see in the photo…

One thought led to another and the “Faux Birthday Cake” was born!  After careful thought, I realized there are many, many advantages to a fake cake.

They are…

  • It will make a great conversation piece (just make sure you have a real cake, too).
  • Fat free and calorie free.
  • Great idea for someone who can’t eat sugar.
  • You can use it over & over.
  • Perfect decor for the gift table.
  • It’s cute.
  • It’s fun to make.

The matching garland just adds more fun, don’t you think? (*See directions below.)

For a special touch I added real frosting to the base and then came across some pre-made paper flowers that almost look like frosting, so I added those, too.

Faux flowers would look pretty on top, too.  No matter what colors you use, or what little decorations you add, the thought behind this unique idea will surely please your birthday person!

Here’s how I made the cake part:

Faux Birthday Cake Basic supplies:

-1 box  Make It: Fun ® Foam Project Bricks

-2 cans of spray paint: lime green & turquoise

-1 foam sheet

-stapler & strong glue (glue gun would work great)

-pillar candle (real or led) & a tall glass to set it on inside the cake

-ribbon, paper flowers & frosting for decorations

Faux Birthday Cake Instructions:

I spray painted the bricks with several coats in a cardboard box at first and then I let them dry on this old towel.  I touched them up a couple times until they were completely covered.  Always spray in a well ventilated area and use a mask.

Spray Painting Foam

I cut approx. 3- 1  1/2 inch strips from the foam sheet and sprayed them with the turquoise spray paint.  Then I connected the ends with staples (see photos below).  I didn’t measure the length of each strip, but started with the largest, and made them approx. 2 inches shorter than the one before so they could sit on each other (with no glue) when the bricks were attached.

I attached the bricks 1 at a time with glue.  If they don’t fit perfectly, just cut the last brick to size, they cut very easily.

Making a faux cake!

I made a “tower” with the rings of bricks, and found a glass that would fit into the middle so I could place a candle on it.  I was careful not to get the candle near any of the foam because it will melt.  It’s best to use a candle that melts only on the inside-or a fake candle.

Fake Cake Idea

Then I decorated it with ribbon, real frosting stars, and the paper flowers.

Decorating a fake cake!

*To make the garland, just thread the painted bricks onto fishing wire and use a tiny split sinker on each end to hold in place.  My husband thought of that!
