Welcome back to our “Thrift Store Decor Challenge” for September 2015.

I hope this doesn’t spook you away.

I was just minding my own business strolling through our local Goodwill and I came across this unusual colorful painting for $2.99.

Then I read the bottom of it…look closely on the bottom left.

You should see the word “Spirits”.

How ironic that I happen to come across this beautiful form of expression at such a low time.  You see…I’ve lost several friends and family members during the past 6 months.   My family and I have mourned quite a bit lately and I have been in touch with my spiritual side more than usual.

The colors, the energy, the depth of this painting seem very fitting at this time.  When I look at this artwork I see colorful spirits alive with life…not death.

I actually spotted one of the “spirits” sticking their tongue out at me, but I found it to be funny, not scary.  Maybe you can spot it.  I’ve also spotted flowers, lightening, words, and faces.

This painting makes me feel alive.  I hope it does you, too.  I bet the artist would flip if they saw their masterpiece now.

This is how we made it into our “Thrift Store Art Turned Masterpiece”:

First,I glued it with wood glue to a piece of particle board.  I made sure to leave an edge all the way around to give me enough room to place a frame.

The frame consists of 1×5 inch pine boards.  My husband cut the boards at a 45 degree angle.

We finished it off by gluing the frame around the painting and then touching up the spaces with sand-able wood putty.  We had to let it dry and sand it a couple times before we painted it white.

The rustic black spray painted L shaped brackets were screwed in for a more industrial look, and to give it some charm.

Thrift Store Art Makeover

Here’s the SPOOKY part:  While waiting for the paint to dry, I noticed the painting had mysteriously moved about 3 inches almost off the table I had it on.  I asked my family if they had moved it, but they didn’t.

We decided it must have been the cat, or the dog.  Wait…we don’t have a dog, and Sylvia doesn’t go out in the garage.

I’ll let you know if it moves again!
