Rustic Autumn Hutch

Facebooktwitterpinterestmail

He’s neglected.  Ignored.  Leaned on too much.  Hasn’t been washed in months.  He’s been there in good times, and not so good times.  He’s even kept secrets and witnessed midnight cookie monsters and Santa Claus!

Yes…I’m talking about our hutch.  The one in the kitchen.  The white handcrafted maple wood custom built-in hutch that is there through it all, and we rarely pay any attention to it.

Well…not today folks.

It’s time.

Introducing our beautiful “Rustic Autumn Hutch”…White Hutch for Fall

This Rustic Fall Hutch has turned out prettier than I ever imagined.  And I imagine a lot.  What do you think of it?

Here’s another angle…what stands out the most to you?

Some have questioned the wood.  The wood is my favorite element, and I use it in my designs often.  We have a fireplace in our kitchen, and our family room, so it fits in nicely.  It also adds that rustic appeal.  I much rather decorate with a piece of wood than a plastic something something. It’s REAL.

Oh, and I know the trend is “neutral” right now.  This is about as neutral as I can go, unless I’m in my car.

Here’s the before:

If you look closely, you can see that I skipped painting the inside of the cabinets when I originally painted.  I planned on getting to them later, but it just never seemed important until now.

Here’s the before before:

What a difference the paint made.  I now had a clean fresh slate to work with and millions of wine glasses on my island that you can’t see.  Everything I gathered I had on hand. Except the owl (product list at bottom of post), and the fresh gourds.  Okay, the candy apples, too.  They were $1 an apple at Meijer.

The mums were out on our porch, the paper bag was under my kitchen sink, the wood was stacked on the porch, the beer was in my fridge, and the ice was is in my freezer.

Rick made the popcorn.

The mason jars are filled with real popcorn kernels and glass tea light holders.  I mentioned on INSTAGRAM (follow me!) that a couple of the kernels slipped into the hot wax.  They did not pop!

Did you know cats can eat popcorn?  Yep!

Here’a few decorating tips.  When I decorate a room, or a piece of furniture for a photograph or for company, there are certain elements that give it that special cozy pulled together feel.  Here’s my list give or take a few:

1. Pop of color (crucial for me).

2. Something living: Mum plant (other i.e.’s cat, dog, fish,)

3. Natural Element: wood (other i.e.’s stone, sticks)

4. Food: popcorn/candy apples (other ie.’s coffee, wine, cheese, bread, pie)

5. Something shiny: silver/owl/glass knobs (other i.e.’s gold, crystal)

6. Warm light: lit candles (other ie.’s lamp, lit fireplace, Christmas lights)

(I see photographs with lights off and candles/fireplaces unlit and I want to jump into the photo and light them up!)

The scarf added some charm and a little pattern.  (note: be carful with the candles)

I see your island annnd your kitty and all I got is “you put the lime in the coconut – you drank them both up…”

So happy I found your site, Julie! Sitting here in 91* heat, and missing fall in MI just a little bit. Thanks for the great ideas and an interesting post.

  5. Christina in FL says:

Julie, this is magnificent! I mean truly magnificent! The paint totally rejuvenated the hutch and so glad you got to paint the inside of the cabinets. Your decorating is party-ready! 🙂

  6. Kim says:

Hi! I love this and I have been lurking on your blog about painting your kitchen cabinets and hopefully I will get up the nerve to do it! What I noticed and something I have been wondering about is that you painted the cabinet brackets! I have an 80’s house and it has all gold hardware. I love that you painted them and how good it looks! Thank you!

  7. Shirley says:

Your dresser looks so much better painted white and you have decorated it beautifully. I guess you could also use battery tea lights. Your cat looks adorable. I must try mine with popcorn. One of mine loves waffles & pancakes!

  8. Jan says:

I can hardly wait to 1) buy a home, 2) unload the Packrat, 3) find the hutch, and 4) pick a color to paint the hutch some gorgeous outrageous color! Thanks for the inspiration Julie.

  9. LOVE LOVE LOVE this hutch. What a fantastic makeover. And the way you have it decorated… perfection!

  10. Joy says:

    • Julie Fiato says:

Thank you, Tammy! I had some serious creative juices flowing that week. I need to get that grove back!! Thanks for stopping by XO 🙂 ~ Julie

  12. Sharon Smith says:

Julie, I am new to your site and have just fallen in love with it and your ideas. We have a lot of similar tastes and that certainly doesn’t hurt. I have a hutch in my dining room that I love. Afraid to paint because of my love of wood. I live in the forest, up north a ways from you. Thinking maybe I shall, when I do the living room in new colors (open floor plan), so it all ties in. Anyway, THANKS SO MUCH for help you give in the thinking and seeing department!

What an amazing piece to have. I can only imagine how convenient it is not only for storage, but for entertainment and personal use. It appears from one of the photos (saw just a peek) of what appears to be another built-in in your kitchen that you’ve painted white. Show us that one too. Most of us merely dream of such built-ins.

  16. Bette says:

    Hi Julie:
Haven’t been too active of late, as I broke my wrist and was not doing a lot of typing. All okay now and back on track.
Such a nice gesture to include the mammogram site. Hope you are well. You did a fantastic job on your hutch makeover. I have an old oak china cabinet and would like to maybe paint it one day. Could you give me your procedure from start to finish and the products you used.
Am in love with all your ideas.

    Cheers, Bette

    • Julie says:

Oh dear!! I am so sorry to hear about your wrist! I used Behr Ultra in Swiss Coffee. No sanding because the wood was dry. I used a brush on all except on face of cabinets I used a small roller. I painted over the hinges which worked out fine!

  17. Connie says:

Love it! Every bit of decor compliments each other. The white color in the background brings all the beautiful colors to life. So cozy! Beautiful touch, Julie.
