Black Berry Pie Recipe

For the last 26 years, my husband has been telling me the story about Grandpa’s Black Berry Pie.  No matter how many times he tells it, we listen with puckered cheeks, and we imagine this…

Easy Black Berry Pie

Fast Black Berry Pie!

Howie would make the pies at their “camp”.  My husband says his grandmother, Millie, picked the berries and made the crust.  Howie would put it all together and bake it.  My husband describes the pie as sweet and tart and a taste he’s kept in his heart for over 40 years.

I finally decided to make one of my own.  We couldn’t locate Howie & Millie’s Black Berry Pie recipe, but I searched recipes and came up with one on my own.  Most black berry pie recipes have 4 things in common so, this wasn’t difficult to figure out.  The crust, berries, sugar, and flour just all have to be adjusted to what you prefer using what you have on hand.

I added the berries I had bought at the grocery store, and adjusted the ingredients and flavors until I felt it was just right.  It turned out very sweet, yet tart just like Rick describes.

The berries were incredibly large this year.  I’ve never seen black berries this size.  We had a bush out back when I was kid and I remember picking them then.  I think my Dad made black berry jam.

Biting into one of these berries was like a sweet juicy purple squirt fest in my mouth.  No other way to describe it.

Welcome to “Purple Squirt Fest 2015”.  Grandpa style.

What Howie and Millie didn’t know back then was that mixing a crust in the pie plate would work just as well as rolling one out.

This will not work with a “double pie crust pie”, but it will if you do it like I did with just stars on top.  Just be sure to make 2 crusts.  One for the bottom pie part, and one to make decorations for the top.

Here’s the pie right before I baked it…

For the record-Millie only used a bottom crust, too.

My Black Berry Pie ...right before I baked it. This recipe is so easy and delicious.

Black Berry Pie Recipe

Ingredients

  • crust (see below)
  • 4 cups fresh washed black berries
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • whipped topping

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Prepare uncooked crust-you will need 2 crusts if you want stars on top. (the link to my "Easy 10 Minute Make in Pie Plate Crust" can be found in my post "Black Berry Pie by redheadcandecorate.com")

Add berries (I left a few out to add on top for the look), flour, and sugar to a bowl and gently combine with a wooden spoon. Be careful with the berries so not to smoosh them.

Pour berry mixture into prepared raw crust.

Use second crust to make your stars with a cookie cutter, or a butter knife (be creative, make anything you wish).

Cover edges of crust with thin strips of tin foil or use a metal crust protector. Do the same with the stars.

Bake 50 minutes or until bubbly and crust is done.

Serve with whipped topping.

Your dear hubby is right! Nothing better than a warm home made blackberry pie right out of the oven with a scoop of ice cream on top. ( I will have to try your recommendation of whip cream). So sweet yet tangy. So relieved to see that you too use a ‘no roll’ pie crust. I always figured I was cheating by making it. But it is so easy and so tasty! Love your idea of making enough for ‘cut outs’ on top. Now how clever and pretty is that? Guess I have no choice but go find some fresh berries now. Thank you once again for your inspiration.
