DIY Candelabra Flower Planter with Upcycled Ceiling Fan Shades

Facebooktwitterpinterestmail

Candelabra Magazine Shot 2 Happy Mother’s Day weekend!

This marks my 15th Mother’s Day…

My husband usually makes breakfast with our girls and they give it to me in bed.

I’m a lucky lady 🙂

This year we invited my Mom & Dad over for a BBQ.

I made this cute flower pot for my Mom.

I hope she doesn’t read this post today!

If you do…surprise, Mom!

Happy Mother's Day

If you look closely you may notice that the flower pot is made from one of the ceiling fan shades I had

after I made this “DIY Candelabra Flower Planter”.

There were 4 total, but I only needed 3.

Upcycled Ceiling Fan Shades

 DIY Candelabra Flower Pot

It’s rather funny how this “upcycled ceiling fan shade(s)” project, all came together.

Originally, I planned on just using the left over shades from our broken ceiling fan that we took down, for flower pots.

Pretty simple idea…right?

(you can see what we replaced the ceiling fan with here: Affordable Rustic Chandelier)

Then I realized they needed something to sit on or they looked unfinished, and boring.

So, I searched the house.

That’s what I do when I need inspiration.

When I went down into the basement, the candelabra said, “Well hello, Dolly” in a deep voice.

Joking of course, but it did pop out at me.

I couldn’t believe it, but it was almost as if they were made to fit together.

All I had to do is supply the super glue.

(flowers are called Lobelia from Home Depot here in MI)

For the life of me, I can not remember where I got the candelabra.

I do remember though, that after it tarnished I decided to spray paint it white.

I kind of regretted that, until now.

See how snug they fit together?

Like 2 peas in a pod.

I’m still a little in shock over it.

I display it on our front porch and sometimes I go out there and shake my head in disbelief.

You just never know where a DIY project will lead you.

This ended up being one of my favorite projects so far.

It’s so beautiful!

Here’s what I did with one of the ceiling fan’s white blades (a must see!) ——> click here.

I created this “Mom” graphic below not only for my own Mom, but for all of you as well.

Whether you’re lucky enough to share this Mother’s Day with your Mom, or if she is smiling down from Heaven…

I think it will remind you of all the sacrifices your Mom made for you.

(If you would like to print it, just right click, then save to another tab, then print.)

~UPDATE~

Here’s one more way to use the candelabra flower planter…

It works really well as a triple vase too!  I figured this out after my flowers dried up.

Just fill w/water and clippings from your favorite flower from your yard.

These are from a Lilac bush that finally bloomed for us this year.

How does the water stay in the fan globes? Aren’t they open at the end? Love this idea.

HI! I just saw this pinned on Pinterest and it definitely is AWESOME! I love that you upcycled it and that you do what I do…walk around the house looking for inspiration! I love how beautifully they seemed to made for “each other too” how propitious!
I just want to comment that if you use them with soil, you have to provide drainage in the bottom. I usually use styrofoam chips or re-use the packaging that everything seems to come with these days. You could also use small pebbles or gravel. In a pot that size, I would probably use up to 2″ of drainage material.
Just thought you or your readers would make use of this info…it’s probably why the lobelia dried up 😉
Anyways, I love your site, and I will be keeping my eyes open to make something similar to this too.
Thanks for sharing the tutorial on it!

Wonderful idea! I just found your website! Where have you been all my life, just kidding, lol. I have a similar idea….using a floor lamp, screw in globe or wire a container the top wrap with twine, plant some flowers, or use silk. Make it pretty full due to height of lamp post.

  17. Leo says:

Love the fan and was blown away by the candelabra flower planter. Great Job!

  18. Allison says:

What did you do to see the bottom of the fan light? So you were able to,put flowers in. Probably a stupid question. Just needed to know so I don’t spoil my Mother’s Day gift. Love this idea.

I just happened to stumble across this post and instantly in LOVE! I don’t currently have the supplies needed to make it but trust and believe I will be on the hunt to find them! I can see two of them in my future to install on each side of deck railings going up to the door of my full time “tiny home” (25′ RV lol) Thank you for sharing your creativity!

  26. Michele Garrett says:

I just love your idea! I tried the project but when I was securing the globe with waterproof glue it just wouldn’t stay on. Could you suggest the adhesive you used?

    • Julie says:

Hi Michele, I did some research for you and I recommend this product below (the link I left). My husband uses it on his arrows for bow hunting, and we just used it on another project and it really works well. The only thing is, you may have to touch up the project after you glue it- with the color paint you are using. 28. […] As far as Rick and I, well…we are so excited to begin this new chapter in our lives where we can focus more on ourselves, and maybe even travel more. We will be renting the apartment for a couple years while we build our final dream home. Now, when I say dream home, that does not mean big. We are downsizing, and can’t wait to share it with you. So, stay tuned because I plan to share everything from the sale of this house (including the showings I stage), to the decorating of the “apartment”, to the building of our new home. There will still be lots of in-between projects and of course recipes. I hope you will stay tuned in because I’m also planning seasonal giveaways using some of the projects I have posted here. In fact, next week I’m giving away THIS!!! […]

  29. […] Create a big focal point in your garden by adding this candelabra flower planter. Just repaint and revamp the candelabra and then plant the flowers or herb in it and hang it up in the garden for a big focal stimulation. It will surely rank up your garden. Adorn the completed planter more by adding a faux nest and bird. Details here redheadcan […]
