Calling all explorers …

It’s time for “Bedroom Makeover for a Teen Part 3”.

We’re talking maps.

“DIY Custom Framed World Maps” to be exact.

Have you noticed they seem to be popping up everywhere in home decor?

On walls, on lamp shades, even on furniture.

I have to admit, I like them too.

World maps, road maps, old maps…

The colors are beautiful.

The details make them interesting.

They scream smart.

Beautiful, interesting, and smart.

Hey, I know someone like that.

Her name is, Valerie.

Our daughter, Valerie also loves social studies, and has a passion for learning about other countries.

When I began to think about what should go over her headboard in her new bedroom,

I knew a map would be a perfect fit.

So, I went on line and searched for maps.

I found this one on Ebay for $10.

What I didn’t know, was that it came in sections.

It also came with no instructions.

I ordered too quickly.

Instead of sending it back, I decided to try it.

Valerie and I put the map together on the floor like a puzzle.

Then we taped it very carefully with masking tape to secure it.

We measured on her wall exactly where we wanted it and we used a level to get it straight.

Then the tacking began.

I tacked each corner of each piece into the wall while removing the tape carefully.

I actually like the rustic look the tacks give it.

It’s not perfect, but it’s original.

Then came the DIY custom frame.

We purchased 1 x 3 knot free pine boards for under $25.

My husband measured the map corner to corner and cut the boards on an angle.

I carved “Val” into one board for fun.

I stained them with 3-4 coats of mahogany stain, and then 2 coats of glossy polyurethane.

After they were dry, we positioned the boards over the map where we wanted them, and used nails to secure.

This is the way I look at it…

When we get tired of the map, we can always find a poster, or photo to put in the frame.

If we move, we pull everything out, and patch the wall easily.

No need for a large heavy frame.

Valerie loves it.

I told her that she can put colored tacks on all the places she wants to visit in her life.

I have a feeling there are going to be hundreds of tack holes 🙂

Love it Julie! I will be redoing our girls’ bedrooms here soon (although right now all 3 sleep in the same room, haha!) so I am excited to see Val’s room redo:)

  3. I love this Julie!! I am such a travel addict and even though I have been so many places there are still so many more I want to visit and I think it’s great that Val can “pin” the places she wants to visit! Speaking of pinning… I am pinning this now! 🙂

I am so happy that I found this on your site, because I have a couple of maps, but was not sure until now, how I wanted to frame them. Thanks Julie. Hope you had a fun weekend.
