DIY Fall Corn Wreaths

Facebooktwitterpinterestmail

Shuck-a lucka lucka boom boom, shuck-a lucka lucka boom boom!

Do you hate shucking corn as much as I do?

It was fun as a kid, but now, not so much.  Those little hairs.  They drive me crazy.

Daphne and Valerie do it for me now, such good girls helping me.

So, although this isn’t a post about shucking corn, it is a post about two

“DIY Fall Corn Wreaths”

I made this year.

Here’s the one I made for the front door:

Fall Corn Wreath

Isn’t she cute?

The mail lady will love it I think.

Here she is on my French black doors.

Oolala.  Tres chic.

Autumn Wreath 1

Now this beauty isn’t just any ordinary Fall wreath.

She’s very unique because I used things I had around the house to make her.

The only thing I bought was the sunflower, and I even had a coupon for Michael’s for that.

She was cheap man!!

Okay, before I tell you how I made it, here’s the second one I made after I showed my Mom that one.

She kindly asked…”Can you make one for me, Julie?”

“Of course I can, Mom!”

Then I scrambled and searched the house for things I could use.

This is what I came up with:

Corn Husk Roses

It’s not your typical “Fall” wreath and that’s why I like it.

She loved it, and it’s hanging on my parent’s little yellow house now 🙂

So here’s how I did this.

My hubby is a hunter.  He buys deer feed.

When I saw the big clear plastic bag of it in our garage, my mind wandered off into wreath fantasy land.

I imagined a big yellow corn wreath.

Then reality struck and I didn’t want to work that hard getting these hard guys to form a circle.

I think they are beautiful, don’t you?

Deer Feed

So, I went down into the room in my basement where I keep all of my holiday decor.

I was inspired instantly.

Can you find the leaf garland on the wall?

I’ve had it forever.

So once I got it into a circle, I needed to decorate it.

This is where dried corn husks come in to play.

We had eaten the corn, but I knew the husks may come in handy this Fall for decor.

So I dried them out (be careful of ants if you do this).

corn 2

Holy corn cobs, I guess we like corn.

I added a few of the corn husks to the deer feed corn, and tied twine around it,

then secured it on the wreath with wire.

I hid the wire with the twine.

Then I collected anything else that would go well with the Fall, natural theme.

This is where I decided to trash any fake stuff.

I went back out into the yard and found the pine tree branches,

and pine cones (I used wire to secure on wreath).

The apple(s) are from a neighbors tree (I used 3m Command Strips to secure).

The burlap ribbon I had (tie it into a bow just like when you tie your sneakers).

The grassy wheat you see was found in a popular store parking lot landscape area.

My Mom and I “borrowed” it.  Sh!!!

Almost done.

This 2nd wreath was really easy.

The eucalyptus part is actually an old wreath my sister bought me when I moved out 22 years ago.

I use it on my side door now, but it really needed a make over.

First, I added the pine tree branches again (with wire).

Then I made roses from the left over corn husks.

You just roll it up and secure the rose with masking tape.

I thought of that on my own, but now I see it’s actually quite popular.

(darn! thought it was only my idea)

I secured those in the wreath with hot glue.

This is elegant, and beautiful.

Just like my Mom.

Who says Fall wreaths have to be orange, yellow, and brown anyway?

I hope I inspired you to walk around outside your home, or in a park, or even a parking lot (ha),

and find natural elements to use rather than going to Michael’s to buy everything fake.

Our Earth provides it for free.  No coupon required.

Happy Fall!

I really need to learn how to make wreaths. Your wreaths are beautiful. I go to the store and see them and say “I can make one of those.” Then I go home and think about making one and I say “I should just buy one.” LOL!!

Hello Julie…….almost 2 years since your autumn wreath blog; so glad I stopped to check it out. they are awesome. I like the idea of natual items picked from our own yard or timber. I grew up on a farm and have always ‘collected’ stuff from nature. I need something for my front door; you have put me in the mood to create an autumn wreath so when the weather cools a bit I’ll be ready. Love your ‘home tour’; very pretty house and everything inside is fabulous.

  19. Ivory says:

Julie, I love this wreath you made, so beautiful. I also appreciate the fabulous idea to use things around the house, both inside and out. Things provided by Mother Nature as well. You truly do know how to take something not so pretty, and turn it into a fabulous work of art. Thank you
